Sports in brief: Djokovic, Kuznetsova win titles

Tennis: Novak Djokovic won the China Open with a 6-2, 7-6 (4) victory over Croatia’s Marin Cilic, and Svetlana Kuznetsova of Russia defeated Agnieszka Radwanska of Poland 6-2, 6-4 in the women’s final Sunday.

The second-seeded Serbian broke Cilic’s serve in the sixth game and again in the eighth to take the first set following a 90-minute rain delay.

The sixth-seeded Kuznetsova needed just 1 hour, 20 minutes to complete the straight-sets victory, racking up six aces along the way. The 20-year-old Radwanska, who won the Wimbledon and Roland Garros titles as a junior, was playing in her first singles final since June 2008.

Rangers shut out Ducks at home

Hockey: Ales Kotalik’s power-play goal snapped a third-period tie, and backup Steve Valiquette made 18 saves in the New York Rangers’ fourth straight victory, 3-0 over the Anaheim Ducks.

New York, 4-0 since a season-opening loss at Stanley Cup champion Pittsburgh, earned this victory in Sean Avery’s season debut following his knee injury during training camp. Avery played his annoying style and goaded Ducks defenseman Ryan Whitney into a roughing penalty 1:34 into the third, setting up Kotalik’s winning score.

Canucks beat Stars in shootout: Kyle Wellwood and Ryan Kesler scored in the shootout, and the Vancouver Canucks overcame a tying goal late in regulation to beat the Dallas Stars 4-3.

Dallas rookie Jamie Benn scored his first NHL goal to tie the game with 1:33 left in regulation.

Canucks’ Sedin to miss up to six weeks: The Vancouver Canucks will be without top forward Daniel Sedin for four to six weeks because of a broken foot.

Sedin, who averaged more than 30 goals for the Canucks over the past three seasons, was hit in the foot by a shot from teammate Alex Edler in a 7-1 win over Montreal on Wednesday. He finished the game and recorded three assists, but X-rays on Friday revealed a fracture.

Two Louisville players arrested

Miscellany: Two University of Louisville basketball players have been released from jail after being arrested on misdemeanor charges of resisting law enforcement in southern Indiana.

Sophomore forward Terrence Jennings and senior guard Jerry Smith were arrested Saturday night in Jeffersonville, Ind.

Hambuechen hurts ankle traingin at gym worlds: Fabian Hambuechen, the silver medalist at the 2007 world gymnastics championships, left the gym on crutches after injuring his ankle during training.

Hambuechen appeared to get too much power on one of his tumbling passes on floor. .

Junior champ wins in Finland: Alena Leonova of Russia won the ladies’ competition in the annual Finlandia Trophy figure skating event in Helsinki, and Sinead and John Kerr of Britain won the ice dance title.

Wanjiru wins Chicago Marathon: Sammy Wanjiru of Kenya won the Chicago Marathon with the fastest time on American soil, finishing in 2 hours, 5 minutes, 41 seconds.
