The Slice: The perfect time of year to go deep

I’m not really all that interested in college football this year.

But I still like a nice Top 20 now and then.

1. A Seattle Times story last week said Spokane isn’t really as awful as the writer always thought.

2. Lots of Slice readers remember when gas stations gave away little gifts and a fair number of people still have some of them.

3. Cheryl Fries reminded me that there’s a South Hill in Bonners Ferry, too.

4. It’s nuts that Columbus Day is a federal holiday.

5. Read the word “Octoberfest” often enough and pretty soon you crave sauerkraut, sausage, mustard and beer.

6. If your bicycle had a vanity license plate, what would it say?

7. Ten percent of your neighbors make 90 percent of the noise.

8. You can drop off those phonebook magnet ads at any Spokane Public Library branch c/o Sally Chilson – for kids’ craft projects.

9. Kathy Morse thinks people who don’t retrieve their “garage sale” signs should be ticketed for littering.

10. Some teens still sweat it out about dancing in public for the first time.

11. Do you think KHQ’s Kaitlyn Bolduc looks a little like Abigail Spencer of “Mad Men”?

12. A couple of readers said church is the worst when it comes to fragrance overkill.

13. Don’t believe everything you hear about sprinkler-blowout panic.

14. You could trick-or-treat as a refueling tanker.

15. We knew it was a serious winter last year when the road to the National Weather Service office was declared closed.

16. My Minnesota-bred doctor lost some teeth playing hockey.

17. What’s the oldest recording in your DVR stack?

18. No Marmot Lodge meeting this month.

19. Check out www.spovangelist.com.

20. I’m having some minor shoulder trouble, so I won’t be raking a reader’s leaves this year.

Today’s Slice question: How’s the squirrel roadkill carnage on your street?

Write The Slice at P.O. Box 2160, Spokane, WA 99210; call (509) 459-5470; fax (509) 459-5098; e-mail pault@spokesman.com. My beard is starting to make me look like a crazy old man.
