Idaho veterinarian, hunting partner face poaching charges

A Bonners Ferry veterinarian and his hunting partner have been charged with illegally taking two bull elk on the day before archery season opened.

Dr. Roland H. Hall, 56, and Dennis L. Liermann Jr., 32, of Naples, each was charged with unlawfully killing two bull elk within a 12-month period.

The alleged poaching occurred Sept. 5 at Trapper Creek in the upper Priest Lake drainage. Idaho Fish and Game officers weren’t able to file charges until last week, because Hall and Liermann had left for a hunting trip to Alaska, said Craig Walker, the agency’s regional conservation officer.

Neither Hall nor Liermann could immediately be reached for comment.

If convicted, the two men could face up to five years in prison, $50,000 in fines, and a lifetime revocation of their hunting privileges.

Hall and Liermann were apprehended through a tip left on the Citizens Against Poaching Hotline, (800) 632-5999.

“These kinds of things wouldn’t be detected if not for the help of the general public,” Walker said.
