In brief: EWU Homecoming starts Monday

CHENEY – Eastern Washington University will celebrate Homecoming 2009 Monday through Oct. 24.

The Homecoming Week Kickoff will be held at noon in the Pence Union Building. There will be a window and banner painting competition in the PUB from noon to 4 p.m. and the U.S. Army Wild Wild Eagle Strong Competition will be held behind the JFK Library from 8:30 a.m. to 6 p.m.

Other events include:

Tuesday: Campus crawl, noon to 4 p.m., PUB multipurpose room.

Wednesday: ROTC Obstacle Course, 4 p.m., Phase Fieldhouse.

Oct. 22: Homecoming Pageant, 7 p.m., second-floor auditorium of Showalter Hall.

Oct. 23: Parade in downtown Cheney at 7 p.m., followed by a pep rally and bonfire at 7:30 p.m. and bed races at 8 p.m.

Oct. 24: Car show, 10 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. on Washington Street at the stadium. Live music, 10 a.m. to 12:30 p.m., P-12 parking lot. Tailgate contest, noon to 12:45 p.m., P-12 parking lot. EWU vs. Montana State football game begins at 1:05 p.m. EWU vs. Idaho State volleyball game begins at 7 p.m.

Actors needed for holiday play

CHENEY – StageWest Community Theatre of the West Plains will hold auditions for the play “Lost Santa” on Friday from 6:30 to 8 p.m. and Saturday from 3 to 5 p.m. at Emmanuel Lutheran Church, 639 Elm St., Cheney.

Producers are looking for a Santa-type man, three men ages 30 to 55, two women ages 30 to 55, one boy age 10 to 15 and one girl age 10 to 15.

The play will be performed the first two weekends of December.

Trulove completes leadership course

CHENEY – Tom Trulove, a member of the City Council and chair of the economics department at Eastern Washington University, has earned a Certificate of Municipal Leadership from the Association of Washington Cities.

Trulove completed more than 30 hours of training credits to receive this certificate, as well as attended a variety of AWC-sponsored workshops.

Fall Leaf Festival is Saturday

WEST HILLS – The annual Fall Leaf Festival will be Saturday at John A. Finch Arboretum, 1299 S. F St., from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m.

The event will teach about composting, urban forestry and gardening, plus offer the fun of jumping into big piles of leaves.

The event, presented by the Spokane Parks and Recreation Department, is free.

Coats to be given out Saturday

CHENEY – The Cheney Helping Cheney/Coats 4 Kids Community Coat Drive will distribute coats Saturday at Salnave Elementary School, 1015 Salnave Road, from 9:30 a.m. to 2 p.m.

Coats of all sizes were collected by local businesses, churches and schools. The Wash Tub in Cheney cleaned the coats.

Events celebrate autumn, Halloween

ROSALIA – On Oct. 24, Rosalia will celebrate enjoy autumn with the annual Fall Festival on Oct. 24.

The event will run from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., and will include autumn traditions, such as hay rides, picking pumpkins at the pumpkin patch, a pumpkin carving contest and treats.

Admission is $3 per person. Children 12 and under must have parent permission.
