Washington drivers letting $5 go to parks
OLYMPIA — Many drivers renewing their license tabs are allowing $5 donations to go to Washington state parks.
The state collected $1.4 million in September, the first month the opt-out system took effect. That also included people who paid their fees earlier plus donations other than the license program.
State parks spokeswoman Virginia Painter said donations are on track. The parks budget needs to average about $1.2 million per month from the car tab program to avoid shortfalls.
The Legislature replaced opt-in donations with the opt-out choice to raise money to keep state parks open.
