San Francisco edges Zags

The University of San Francisco, after dropping the first two games, used some outstanding defense and a match-high 20 kills from Sarah Mandala to claws it way back and beat visiting Gonzaga 3-2 in a West Coast Conference volleyball match Thursday.

USF (8-9, 2-2 WCC) got 22 digs from Carroll Haley, while Kelsey Bashaw, Caitlin Cozad, Michelle Boevers and Layne Brosky each had 10 kills for the Bulldogs (6-11, 2-2)

•Eastern Washington University, after battling back from an early 2-0 deficit, dropped the final game 15-12 and lost to Northern Arizona 3-2 in Big Sky Conference play at Flagstaff, Ariz.

Chenoa Coviare and Hayley Hills each had 14 kills for the Eagles (11-7, 5-2), while NAU (6-10, 3-4) got 17 kills from Kobi Christensen.
