YAKIMA — The federal government is releasing $1 million in emergency relief to speed repairs to portions of a highway wiped out by a landslide in central Washington.

A massive landslide demolished a half-mile of State Road 410 about 15 miles west of Naches on Oct. 11. The landslide destroyed at least two homes and changed the course of the Naches River, causing flooding.

Gov. Chris Gregoire declared a state of emergency in Yakima County due to the damage.

Democratic Sen. Patty Murray and Republican Rep. Doc Hastings announced the funding Monday to accelerate reconstruction and repair of the road.
