Roundup: Whitworth ends UPS streak

Stacy Hamer’s header in the 107th minute gave Whitworth a 1-0 win over Puget Sound in a Northwest Conference women’s soccer match Sunday in Spokane.

The Pirates (12-3, 9-2 NWC) handed the Loggers their first conference loss in 25 matches and ended an 11-match winless streak against UPS.

Keeper Callie Bergstrom made nine saves for Whitworth.

•Eastern Washington moved into sole possession of first place in the Big Sky Conference standings with a 1-0 win over Sacramento State in Cheney.

Whitney Brannan scored in the 50th minute for the Eagles (6-6-2, 3-0-1 BSC), who have a six-game unbeaten streak, longest in school history.

•Mallory Fox converted a penalty kick in the 84th minute as No. 24 Washington State beat Arizona 1-0 in a Pacific-10 Conference match in Tucson, Ariz.

Freshman keeper Ariana Byrd earned her first collegiate victory for the Cougars (10-3-1, 2-0-1 Pac-10). She made three saves in the final 77 minutes after starter Meghan Berlingo left with an injury.

•Pepperdine scored twice in the final 10 minutes to earn a 2-1 victory over Gonzaga in a West Coast Conference match in Malibu, Calif.

Emily Hutchins scored her first career goal 2 minutes into the match for the Bulldogs (6-9, 0-3 WCC) for a lead that held up until the Waves scored in the 80th and 94th minutes.

•Chelsea Small scored twice in the second half as Idaho beat Boise State 3-1 in a Western Athletic Conference match in Moscow.

Jenn Hull also scored for the Vandals (9-7, 2-3 WAC).

•Alex Webber tied the game for Washington (9-2-3, 1-0-2 Pac-10) in the 61st minute and the Huskies and No. 24 Arizona State played to a 1-1 draw in Pac-10 play Tempe, Ariz.

College men’s soccer

Scott Barnum had six saves for his third shutout of the season as Gonzaga beat San Francisco 2-0 in a WCC match in San Francisco.

Ben Funkhouser and Tye Perdido scored for the Bulldogs (5-5-2, 2-3-0 WCC).

•No. 24 Whitworth outshot Puget Sound 19-3 but couldn’t find the back of the net as the Pirates (9-2-2, 7-1-1 NWC) and Loggers played to a scoreless draw in NWC play in Spokane.

Junior hockey

Dylan Tappe’s goal with 3:38 to play gave the Spokane Braves a 4-3 win over the Nelson Leafs in Kootenay International Junior Hockey League action at Eagles Ice-A-Rena.
