Prep roundup: Cheney, Pullman stay tied in GNL

Cheney and Pullman remained tied for first in the Great Northern League after both of their respective girls soccer teams registered easy wins Tuesday.

Kellie Zakrzewski and Chelsie Breen each scored two goals to spark Cheney (10-1 GNL) to an 8-0 decision over host Riverside.

Niina Al-Hassan had two goals and an assist in Pullman’s 4-0 shutout of visiting Clarkston. Al-Hassan has 19 goals this season. Viviana Barona’s goal gave the Greyhounds (10-1) a 1-0 lead 8 minutes into the first half.

•Elsewhere in the GNL: West Valley (8-3) scored eight first-half goals, three in the final 3 minutes, and routed host Colville 10-1. Kaylee Tate scored three goals in the first 28 minutes. … Kayla Moorman’s goal and two assists carried Deer Park (6-5) past host Medical Lake 3-0.

Volleyball

•Greater Spokane League: Gonzaga Prep sent out its six seniors with a memorable five-set home win over Lewis and Clark on Senior Night. The Bullpups (7-2), riding Sydney Weber’s eight blocks and several key digs by Lindsey Stockton to swing the fourth game, beat the Tigers (6-3) for the first time in six years. Janele Bott led LC with 13 kills and 16 digs. … Senior Alexis Olgard rang up 14 kills and seven blocks, lifting No. 1-ranked Mead (8-0) to a 25-23, 25-16, 25-20 sweep over visiting Central Valley on Senior Night. Kelsey Solberg had eight kills and two aces for the Bears (5-4) . … Ixchelle Oleson set the tone with six aces to open the first game and Mt. Spokane cruised to a 25-7, 25-10, 25-19 win over visiting Rogers (0-9). Leanna Lloyd had nine kills for the Wildcats (8-1). The Pirates’ Aley Roberts finished with eight digs and four kills. … Alicia Allen had 26 digs and North Central’s defense played a big role in a four-set win over visiting Shadle Park (1-8). Kimlat Wesen had 42 assists for the Indians (3-6). Alexx Vera paced the Highlanders with 11 kills. … Jordan Bonertz finished with 17 kills and Ashley Moon added 51 assists and two aces as University (6-3) outlasted host Ferris 24-26, 25-10, 25-16, 25-23. •Great Northern League: Stephanie Logan had 10 kills, Katie Guettinger 22 assists and Shelby Cheslek five blocks as Pullman (11-0) downed visiting Deer Park 25-18, 25-19, 25-14. Stephanie Ruygrok had 20 digs for the Stags (1-10). … West Valley (9-2) kept its hold on second place with a 25-22, 25-18, 25-20 win at Clarkston (5-6). The Eagles’ Bailey Wold had 13 kills. Kenzee Burke was strong at the net with three blocks for the Bantams. … Third-place Colville pulled away from a 14-14 tie in the second game as Rachelle Main served 10 consecutive points, including four aces. The Indians (8-3) finished with 22 aces in sweeping visiting Riverside (5-6) 25-23, 25-15, 25-11. … Shaley Ham had six kills and Janae Olson chipped in four digs to spur Cheney (4-8) past visiting Medical Lake 25-16, 25-8, 25-19. Myryda Johnson had seven assists and two aces for the Cardinals (1-10).

•Intermountain League: Taylor Stewart had 16 kills and seven aces as host Priest River (9-11, 5-2) celebrated Senior Night with a 25-14, 25-20, 25-15 win over Timberlake. Sierra Monti led the Tigers (10-14, 3-7) with seven digs.

Slowpitch softball

University (15-2) and Central Valley (12-5) will play Thursday for the GSL championship. Freshman Brittany Hecker’s three-run homer in the first put University on top for good and the Titans pounded out 16 hits to cruise past visiting Lewis and Clark 12-2 in one semifinal. Senior Richael Paxson went 3 for 3 with two runs scored. Breann Warren went 2 for 2, scored a pair of runs and picked up the win by pitching a complete game. … Becky White drove in four runs and Jenna Gafkin scored twice to pace Central Valley’s 8-3 victory over visiting Ferris. The Bears built a 6-2 lead after two innings and used strong defense to offset the Saxons’ 14-hit attack.

Cross country

•Great Northern League: Colville’s Ned Fischer, Colton Hastings and Jake Neilsen finished 1-2-3 as the Indians posted wins over Medical Lake and West Valley at The Fairways. Fischer timed 16 minutes, 45 seconds, just in front of Hastings’ 16:45.1. West Valley, led by Alex Coburn’s fourth-place finish, edged Medical Lake. In the girls race, Alison Price (20:16) and Alina Kowitz (20:34) sparked Colville past Medical Lake and West Valley. The Eagles, paced by Alex Fraser and Senaida Monroy, who each timed 20:40.1, defeated Medical Lake. … Nash Springberry took first in 16:38, helping host Cheney knock off Riverside and Deer Park. Reggie Peone finished second in 16:41 to lead Deer Park, which defeated Riverside. Saunne Holland (19:14) claimed first in the girls race as Cheney edged Deer Park and defeated Riverside. … Clarkston at Pullman was postponed until today.
