Wildcats inch closer to GSL title

Carissa Yedica tallied a goal and an assist and the Mt. Spokane Wildcats (12-1, 8-1) dominated the second half en route to a 3-0 victory over the visiting Ferris Saxons (5-9, 3-6) in Greater Spokane League girls soccer action Wednesday.

The Wildcats moved closer to clinching the regular-season league title with one game – against winless Rogers – left on their schedule.

After a scoreless first half, Yedica assisted on a Delaney Zalud goal in the 48th minute to give the Wildcats a 1-0 lead. It was Zalud’s seventh goal in GSL play this season. Yedica scored 4 minutes later to stretch the lead to 2-0.

Elsewhere in the GSL: Mikayla Anderson had a hand in all four Mead goals – scoring three times and assisting on the other – as the Panthers (10-1, 8-1) doubled up the host Central Valley Bears (5-8, 4-5) 4-2. Anderson scored back-to-back goals in the 39th and 45th minutes to erase a 2-1 deficit. … Bev Amstadter scored a pair of first-half goals and Devyn Galland added two second-half scores to lead the Lewis and Clark Tigers (11-3-1, 8-1) to a 7-0 victory over the visiting Rogers Pirates (0-9, 0-9) at Hart Field. … Chelsea Kerley found the net with 2 minutes remaining in the match and the Gonzaga Prep Bullpups (8-4, 5-4) slipped past the visiting North Central Indians (2-10, 1-9) 1-0. … Amanda Bliesner, McKaylin Hughes, Kennah Meyer and Danielle Legore all scored shootout goals to propel the visiting East Valley Knights (4-7, 4-5) to a 1-0 win over the Shadle Park Highlanders (5-8, 3-6) in a match that decided the second and third seeds to the 3A regional tourney. Delaney Orcutt was the lone scorer for Shadle in the shootout. Keeper Hailey Bell notched the shutout.

Cross country

Great Northern League: Aaron Haugen finished 23 seconds in front of the field and the Pullman Greyhounds grabbed seven of the top eight spots en route to a 19-45 victory over the visiting Clarkston Bantams in a boys meet. Haugen clocked in at 18 minutes, 44 seconds. Clarkston’s Evan O’Keefe was second in 19:07, while Pullman’s Jeremy Heizog placed third in 19:08. Sarel Loewus (22:18) breezed to a 42-second victory and the Greyhounds girls defeated the visiting Bantams, who didn’t field a complete team. Clarkston was led by Gabbi Stein’s second-place finish in 23:00 and Kari Scharnhorst’s third-place showing in 23:05.
