Zags roar back to tie Pilots

Zach Smith scored in the 66th minute and the Gonzaga Bulldogs rallied to tie the visiting Portland Pilots 2-2 in a West Coast Conference men’s soccer match Wednesday.

Ryan Luke scored both goals for third-place Portland (7-3-3, 2-2-2), which stayed one point ahead of Gonzaga (5-5-3, 2-3-1) in the conference. Luke’s second goal put the Pilots up 2-0 10 minutes into the second half.

But the Bulldogs halved the lead on a goal by Nick Love in the 60th minute and pulled even on Smith’s netter 6 minutes later. Ben Funkhouser notched assists on both GU goals.

The teams square off again Sunday in Portland.

•Freddy Barragan found the net with 2:10 remaining in the match and the visiting Columbia Basin Hawks (5-3-5, 3-2-4) tied the Community Colleges of Spokane Sasquatch (5-7-3, 5-2-2) 2-2 in a Northwest Athletic Association of Community Colleges match at Spokane Falls CC.

Barragan assisted on a Jesse Keen goal in the 30th minute to put the Hawks up 1-0.

The Sasquatch knotted the score on a goal by Matt Miller off a Morgan Hartanov corner kick in the 37th minute. CCS took a 2-1 lead in the 51st minute when Brandon Stevens found the net off a corner kick by Richie Del Medico.

Women’s soccer

Tabitha Grow took a pass from Maile Cobb and scored with 2:03 left in the match to help the CCS Sasquatch (6-3-3, 6-2-2) earn a 3-3 tie with the visiting Columbia Basin Hawks (10-1-1, 8-1-1) in NWAACC action at SFCC.

Grow assisted on a Cori Jo Young goal in the 17th minute to give the Sasquatch a 1-0 lead, but CBC’s Julissa Rodriguez tied it just 1:36 later.

The Sasquatch retook the lead in the 29th minute on an unassisted goal by Courtney Stewart.

The Hawks used second-half goals by Camri Hughes and Rodriguez to take a 3-2 lead by the 68th minute.

Men’s basketball

The Whitworth Pirates will begin play this season ranked 16th in the D3hoops.com NCAA Division III Top 25 poll.

The Pirates closed out last season ranked 24th after reaching the second round of the national tournament.

Whitworth will open the season against 10th-ranked Wisconsin-Stevens Point at the Puget Sound Tip Off tournament in Tacoma on Nov. 20. The Pirates’ home opener is Dec. 11 against UC Santa Cruz.
