Prep roundup: Mead clinches tie for title

Mead clinched a share of the Greater Spokane League volleyball title Thursday with a three-game sweep at University.

Alexis Olgard led the way with 15 kills and five blocks for the Panthers (9-0), who pulled away from a 21-21 tie in the second game. Mead plays North Central today to end its regular season.

Jordan Schmerer had 23 digs for the Titans (6-4)

In other GSL games: Mt. Spokane (9-1) finished its regular season with a perfect 3A record and a slim possibility of a tie with Mead with a 3-0 win at Shadle Park (1-9). Annie Arnzen led the Wildcats with 13 kills. Caylee Olson and Mckenzie Grimes each had 14 digs for the Highlanders. … Central Valley (6-4) swept visiting Gonzaga Prep (7-3) and plays a tiebreaker with U-Hi on Monday for the fourth seed in the District 4A tournament. Kelsey Solberg had 10 kills for the Bears. … At Lewis and Clark, the Tigers (7-3) dispatched rival Ferris (2-8) in three games. Janele Vogt paced the Tigers with 14 kills.

•Great Northern League: Shelby Cheslek dominated the middle as league-leading Pullman (12-0) won 3-0 at Medical Lake (1-11). … At Deer Park (1-11), Colville (9-3) also won 3-0 as Leanna Carr distributed 20 assists. … Brooklyn Robinson had 29 assists and Bailey Wold had 12 kills and 13 aces as West Valley (10-2) swept visiting Riverside (5-7). … Cheney (5-7) went to Clarkston (5-7) and won 3-0. Sayde Davis ran the offense with 28 assists.

Idaho 4A Region I: Moscow shook off a tight first-game loss to defeat visiting Lakeland in the first game of the regional tournament. Chelsea Waters had 39 assists for the Bears. Bridget Lowe added 19 kills and Amy Westerberg 28 digs. The tournament continues at Sandpoint on Saturday.

Idaho 1A-II District I: For the first time in two weeks Mullan had all six starters healthy and it paid off with a 3-0 win over visiting Kootenai in a loser-out game. The Tigers play at Clark Fork Saturday for the lone state berth. Freshman Kami McKinnon led Mullan with seven kills and seven blocks.

Girls soccer

Great Northern League: Alyssa Kirstein converted a pair of crossing passes from Alexa Shaw into early goals and league-leading Cheney (13-1, 11-1) rolled to a 6-0 win over visiting Colville (3-11, 3-9). Shaw also scored the final goal and Kellie Zakrzewski connected twice. … At Pullman, Amy Sterk had two goals and an assist to lead the Greyhounds (13-1, 11-1) to a 4-0 win over Medical Lake (5-9, 5-7). … Five players scored as West Valley (10-3, 9-3) blanked Clarkston (3-11, 2-10) 5-0 at WV. … At Deer Park, Taylor Reilly and Kayla Moorman scored first-half goals as the Stags (7-6, 7-5) defeated Riverside (0-13, 0-12) 2-0.

Football

Non-league: Lewiston scored the first touchdown but undefeated Capital reeled off 42 straight points to close out the first half, coasting to a 49-27 win over the visiting Bengals. Beau Kerns passed for 236 yards for Lewiston, 80 coming on the opening touchdown play, a hookup with Camden Bernatz.
