Cougs turned away in OT

No. 20 Washington State looked primed to upset No. 1 Stanford in women’s soccer Friday, leading 1-0 with less than 4 minutes to play in Pullman.

Stanford scored in the 87th minute, though, to send the game into overtime and Kelly O’Hara clinched the 2-1 match for the Cardinal 2-1 the 95th minute.

Elysse Van Leer gave the Cougars (10-4-1, 2-1-1) the lead at the 54-minute mark on an assist from Kiersten Dallstream. After four straight saves by Meghan Berlingo in little more than a minute, Stanford’s Christen Press finally broke through with the game-tying goal.

•Gonzaga (7-9, 1-3) played at home for the first time in more than a month and responded with its first West Coast Conference win, a 3-1 victory over San Francisco (6-4-5, 1-3). Catherine Cullen and Jessie Sorenson scored in the second half to break a 1-1 tie at halftime.

•Eastern Washington (6-7-1, 3-1-1) allowed 25 shots against Northern Colorado (5-9-1, 1-4), losing in Big Sky action 4-0 in Greeley, Colo.

•McKenna Waitley’s unassisted goal in the 24th minute lifted Washington (10-2-3, 2-0-2 Pac-10) to a 1-0 win over No. 23 California (8-6-1, 2-3-1) in Seattle.

•Despite outshooting San Jose State (9-4-3, 4-0-1 Western Athletic Conference) 20-15, Idaho (9-8, 2-4) could not recover from an early deficit, losing 2-1 in San Jose, Calif.

Volleyball

Ashley Hamilton notched a double-double for Eastern Washington (13-7, 7-2 Big Sky) with 32 assists and 12 kills and the Eagles rolled over Weber State (5-16, 3-6) 25-17, 25-17, 25-7. Hamilton’s 12 kills came on 12 attacks, giving her the school record in percentage and tying the NCAA record with at least 10 kills.

•Whitworth (9-13, 5-6) won its fifth match in six tries in beating Northwest Conference opponent George Fox (14-5, 7-4) 25-20, 26-24, 25-17 at the Whitworth Fieldhouse in Spokane. Ka’ipo Rocha had 11 kills and three blocks to lead the Pirates.

•Led by 14 kills from Nicole Graybeal and 35 assists from Kelsey Kurtz, Community Colleges of Spokane (24-10, 8-0 NWAACC) held off Columbia Basin CC (18-12, 4-6) 14-25, 25-23, 25-8, 15-25, 15-7 in Pasco.

Hockey

Spokane (13-4-0-1) took control of its game against Sicamous (8-5-0-1) with three goals in the third period to pick up a 5-2 Kootenay International Junior Hockey League win in Sicamous, British Columbia. Cash Ulrich finished with 42 saves for the Braves.
