CV play simply laughable
The comedy “Laughing Stock” is this year’s fall play at Central Valley High School. The play highlights a group of summer actors who try to put on three plays simultaneously: “Dracula,” “Charlie’s Aunt” and “Hamlet.”
Their bumbling attempts lead to a host of missed entrances, exploding props and dropped lines in a play that isn’t suitable for young children.
Daniel Graham plays the theater’s artistic director, Gordon Page, Alexandria Arthum-Rollier is stage manager Sarah McKay and Lani Call is pretentious director Susannah Huntsmen. Other student performers are Jacob Madison as Jack Morris, Ashley Casto as Mary Pierre, Ethan Erickson as Tyler Taylor, James Matney as Vernon Volker, Ryan Danly as Richfield Hawksley, Leslie Krueger as Daisy Coates, Patrick Crumb as Craig Conlin, Brandon Carter as Henry Mills, Ashley Stenson as Breane Oakes, Alanna Hamilton as Karma Schneider and Ashton Toth as Ian Milliken.
The play opens Nov. 5 and performances will begin at 7:30 p.m. Nov. 5-7 and 12-14 at the school, 821 S. Sullivan Road. Admission is $7.
Play Day
The West Valley School District was one of only two districts in Washington state to host Young Athletes Play Days sponsored by Special Olympics Washington. The program, designed to encourage fun and healthy activity among students of all abilities, was hosted at three West Valley schools and attended by all students in grades K-2.
Students rotated between six stations of age-appropriate physical activities. Each received a medal and a T-shirt at the end of the day.
Band competitions
•The West Valley High School Marching Band earned several awards at a recent competition in Yakima. The band earned second place overall in the AA category. Within the AA category they took home Best Brass and Woodwinds, Best General Effect – Music and Visual, Best Color Guard and Best Drum Majors.
•The Central Valley High School Marching Band did well at a recent competition in Hillsboro, Ore. The band took first place in the AAA category and swept the caption awards. CV also took second place in the finals against all other schools and won High Music, High Percussion, Best Drum Majors and the People’s Choice Award.
The CVHS marching band and color guard will perform their 2009 show, “Caravan,” Tuesday at 7:30 p.m. at the high school, 821 S. Sullivan Road. Refreshments will be served and admission is free.
Pumpkin Plod
The Panther Tracks Running Club will host its first Halloween Pumpkin Plod at 9 a.m. next Saturday at East Farms Elementary, 26203 E. Rowan Ave. Families can walk or run a mile.
A pumpkin will be awarded to the winning runner in a costume and prizes will be awarded in several costume categories. The cost is $5 per person or $20 per family. Call the school at (509) 226-3039 to register or for more information.
School carnival
Seth Woodard Elementary will host its annual carnival Friday from 5 to 8 p.m. at the school, 7401 E. Mission Ave. There will be a silent auction, bingo, games, food, face painting and a haunted house. All are welcome.
Drug information
The Central Valley High School Washington Drug Free Youth and the Greater Spokane Substance Abuse Council will present information on OxyContin and prescription drug abuse from 6:30 to 8 p.m. Monday at the school, 821 S. Sullivan Road. There will be information on signs of prescription drug abuse and where addicts can receive help.
