River metric answer clear

The Spokesman-Review

Now the opponents of Proposition 4 include (officially) The Spokesman-Review. As you questioned the language and the “vagaries” of the measure, one question you asked was, “What metrics would determine that the Spokane River is ‘flourishing’ ?”

To me that demonstrates how bad things have become. We are so used to our river being polluted that we can’t imagine a clean river, and need a metrics to determine what is flourishing. How about the metric of zero? How about protections for the river that allow citizens to advocate cleaning it up so people can eat the fish and swim in it? How about a river that we can drink from, rather than a river that is a public health hazard?

Proposition 4 is about some very basic common sense, and putting that sense and power into the hands of the community majority. We should all vote “yes” on Proposition 4.
