Roundup: Akey on Bryant watch list
Idaho head coach Robb Akey is among 20 coaches on the watch list for the Paul “Bear” Bryant College Football Coach of the Year.
The selection committee for the award released the watch list Monday. Finalists will be announced in December and the winner will be awarded Jan. 14 in Houston.
In his third season at Idaho, Akey has the Vandals at 6-2 and bowl-eligible. Idaho had its last winning season in 1999.
Chip Kelly of Oregon and Chris Pedersen of Boise State are other region coaches on the watch list.
•Eastern Washington quarterback Matt Nichols was selected as Big Sky Conference Offensive Player of the Week for the fifth time in his career. The senior led the the Eagles’ 35-24 comeback victory over Montana State. Eastern scored 21 points in the final 12 minutes, 20 seconds.
Eastern Washington’s Ashley Hamilton was selected Big Sky Conference Player of the Week. Hamilton led the Eagles in a sweep of Weber State on Friday and Idaho State on Saturday and earned the Big Sky honor for the second time this season.
•Idaho’s Sarah Conwell was named Western Athletic Conference Player of the Week for the third time this season. She led the Vandals to a 3-0 weekend in WAC matches.
The Gonzaga women’s team will hold the Blue and White Scrimmage on Friday at 6 p.m. at the McCarthey Athletic Center. The event is free. Doors open at 5 and the first 200 fans will receive a T-shirt.
•The Idaho men’s team will hold the first of two intra-squad scrimmages tonight at 7 at Christianson Gym on the North Idaho College campus.
High school volleyball
University swept Central Valley to earn a berth in the 4A District 8 tournament. The Titans won 26-24, 25-11, 27-25 and will play at Mead on Wednesday at 7 p.m.
