Pedestrian died after Friday accident; driver also died
A 19-year-old woman struck by a car Friday while walking along a sidewalk in northwest Spokane died as a result of her injuries, according to the Spokane County Medical Examiner’s Office.
Caroline Hoch was rushed to a Spokane hospital following the noon accident along Assembly Street near Northwest Boulevard and died later that day. Hoch graduated in June from Lewis and Clark High School.
The driver, who also died, apparently had a medical problem, which led to him losing control of his vehicle. He was identified as Kenneth Danel, 78, of northwest Spokane County.

Medical problem, called old age.
I wonder how he did on his last driving test.

No kidding. Driving while old is a constant problem and it scares me. It’s as bad or worse than driving while drunk. People over a certain age should be required to take yearly driving exams.

I agree. I believe there should be yearly driving exams and health records should be made available to the DMV or Doctors should have the right to pull someone’s drivers license and send it to the DMV themselves.

Yeah, this 19 year old girl was my best friend of all time…. I can’t believe this happened to her….. Old age… somebody should do something about it…… like take their licenses away!!!!

It’s so sad that a girl of 19 years died in that fashion due to the illness of the driver; but what has his age got to do with it?
A dear friend of mine aged 45 years old suffered a massive heart attack and died while driving, he was alone, so fortunately no one else was harmed. My best buddy was an ex football player in seemingly perfect health.
What age is too old to be driving? Where should the line be drawn… 25, 30, or what?
Let me give another instance….My niece also nineteen years old was with four friends in a car when the driver also of the same venerable age started to show off, resulting in a crash killing my niece and injuring the other teenage passengers.
Another example that had nothing to do with old age. I was sitting waiting to make a turn in a left hand turn lane into a restaurant when two young guys decided to drag race. I couldn’t believe my eyes when I looked in my rear view mirror and saw them come speeding down the road, I knew that there was no way that they could avoid hitting me. I was right, my Wife was injured, but thankfully only slightly.
In both of those cases, age had nothing to do with it unless the stupid, carelessness of youth is brought into consideration.

I feel safer riding shotgun with a drunk teenager who is simultaneously text messaging and watching “300” on their dashboard DVD player than most elderly people.
