Injured NHL scoring champion Evgeni Malkin will be lost to the Pittsburgh Penguins for two to three weeks because of a strained right shoulder. Malkin had been attempting to play through the injury, but coach Dan Bylsma said the team decided to rest the center. The Russian star would miss seven games if he is out two weeks and 10 games if he is out three.

Declined Former Indiana coach Bob Knight will not attend next week’s induction into the athletic department’s hall of fame at Bloomington, Ind. Athletic director Fred Glass said that Knight contacted him directly to decline the invitation. Glass said Knight was concerned that the interest in him would be a distraction from the other six inductees.

•The Orioles have declined their $8 million option on Melvin Mora, allowing Baltimore’s longest-tenured player to become eligible for free agency. Mora, 37, came to the Orioles in a 2000 trade with the New York Mets. He played 1,256 games for Baltimore, including 807 at third base – the second most in franchise history behind Hall of Famer Brooks Robinson.

Pleaded Phoenix Mercury star Diana Taurasi pleaded guilty to a drunken-driving charge stemming from her July arrest. Taurasi, an all-star guard on the WNBA champions, spent a day in jail after a judge suspended nine days of her sentence. Taurasi’s blood-alcohol level was 0.17 percent when she was pulled over on July 2 following a 93-81 victory over the Seattle Storm. That’s more than twice Arizona’s legal limit of 0.08 percent.

Honored Yankees shortstop Derek Jeter won the Roberto Clemente Award. The Yankees captain was presented with the award before the start of Game 2 of the World Series between New York and the Philadelphia Phillies. The award is given annually to a major league player who combines community service with excellence on the field.

Punished NASCAR placed driver AJ Allmendinger on probation following his arrest early in the morning Thursday on a charge of drunken driving in Mooresville, N.C. Police said Allmendinger failed a field sobriety test after he was pulled over. Late Thursday afternoon, he was placed on probation until the end of the year for actions detrimental to stock car racing.
