Gorgeous gourds

Annual Halloween coloring contest draws nearly 500 entries

This year’s Halloween pumpkin coloring contest really had our young readers using their gourds.

The almost 500 entries we received contained far more treats than tricks, including the nine winners pictured here.

In the 4-and-under age category, judges were impressed by Marie Plowman’s restrained use of decorative pasta, Ben Myers’ Picasso-like portrait and Lucy Jackson’s bold, dark watercolors.

Among the 5- to 7-year-olds, Denny Pefley and Bridget Burns’ colorful creativity stood out along with Sydney Wiyrick’s sparkly, sequined interpretation.

And the cream of the 8- to 12-year-old crop included Tara Turley’s “Twilight”-inspired vampire pumpkin, Sidney Sheer’s clever yin-yang imagery and Hannah Chapman-Dutton’s mixed-media stage scene, complete with sheer taffeta curtains.

Each of the winners receives a gift certificate to Mobius Kids. And all of the entries are on display at the children’s museum in the lower level of River Park Square, 808 W. Main Ave.

So thanks, kids. And remember: For your stomach’s sake, some of those goodies you get tonight can wait until tomorrow.
