Hawks slip past Indians

BOISE – Burundi Davis made sure the Boise Hawks out-rallied the Spokane Indians in Northwest League baseball action Wednesday.

Davis lined a two-out run-scoring double off Indians reliever Johnny Gunter (1-4) in the bottom of the ninth to lift the Hawks to a 4-3 victory.

The win snapped Boise’s six-game slide against Spokane (35-37). The Indians lead Boise (32-40) by three games with four games left in the battle for second place in the East Division.

Both starting pitchers twirled gems. Spokane’s Robert Ross allowed just three hits in five shutout innings while striking out three. Boise’s Christopher Rusin also threw five shutout innings, allowing four hits and two walks.

The Indians scored twice in the eighth on run-scoring doubles by Denny Duron and Clark Murphy to take a 2-1 lead. Boise answered with two runs in its half of the eighth, but Spokane knotted the score at 3-3 on Miguel Velazquez’s RBI single in the top of the ninth.
