The Rodgers brothers are back for Oregon State.

Jacquizz Rodgers ran for 103 yards and three touchdowns, while big brother James caught a pair of passes for 95 yards and a score to lead the Beavers to a 34-7 victory over Portland State in the opener for both teams on Saturday in Corvallis, Ore.

Jacquizz, last season’s Pac-10 offensive player of the year, missed Oregon State’s final two games because of a shoulder injury. He had surgery in the offseason.

His brother broke his collarbone and missed Oregon State’s Sun Bowl victory over Pittsburgh.

With both brothers key to Oregon State’s success this season, they combined for 253 yards of offense against the Big Sky Conference Vikings.

Junior Ray Fry caught 10 passes for 146 yards for Portland State, opening its third season under former NFL coach Jerry Glanville.

Quarterback Drew Hubel completed 20 of 37 passes for 252 yards for the Vikings, who moved the ball but couldn’t quite score against the Pac-10’s Beavers.

Sean Canfield was 8 of 11 for 158 yards and a touchdown for the Beavers.

Canfield was opening the season in place of Lyle Moevao, who was still recovering from offseason rotator cuff surgery. Canfield threw six touchdowns and made two starts last season, while Moevao started in nine games and threw 19 touchdowns with 13 interceptions.

The Beavers finished 9-4 last season, capped by a 3-0 victory in the Sun Bowl, and were ranked No. 18. This season Oregon State just missed a spot in the preseason AP Top 25.

Portland State avoided the shutout with Conner Kavanaugh’s 1-yard touchdown run with 2:51 left.

It was Jacquizz Rodgers’ first three-touchdown game.

(4) USC 56, San Jose State 3: At Los Angeles, Matt Barkley’s first pass at Southern California went for minus-2 yards. His first four series with the Trojans resulted in two fumbles, two punts and a 3-0 deficit to San Jose State.

A typical freshman quarterback surely would have tensed up at this burgeoning Coliseum calamity. Instead, Barkley showed why coach Pete Carroll insists there’s nothing ordinary about his teenage starter – although the Trojans will find out a whole lot more next week at Ohio State.

Barkley passed for 233 yards after a slow start to his USC debut, and the Trojans’ fleet of tailbacks ran for six touchdowns in the win over the Spartans.

(12) California 52, Maryland 13: At Berkeley, Calif., Jahvid Best and his California teammates were wide awake from the start of their rematch against Maryland.

Best ran 73 yards for one of his two first-quarter touchdowns and the Golden Bears avenged an early-season loss to the Terrapins last season with the victory.

Kevin Riley added a career-high four touchdown passes for the Bears, who jumped on top 45-6 in a drastic turnabout from last year’s meeting won by Maryland 35-27.

Best finished with 137 yards.

Arizona State 50, Idaho State 3: At Tempe, Ariz., Mike Nixon returned one of his three interceptions for a touchdown and blocked a punt to lead the Sun Devils past the outmatched Bengals.

The senior linebacker became the first Sun Devil with three picks in a game in 20 years.

Danny Sullivan, in his first start after two seasons as Rudy Carpenter’s backup, completed 13 of 25 passes for 165 yards in 21/2 quarters for the Sun Devils.

The Bengals committed five turnovers and managed just 37 yards, zero in the first half.

Arizona 19, Central Michigan 6: At Tucson, Ariz., Nic Grigsby ran for 118 yards and a touchdown, Alex Zendejas Jr. matched a school record with four field goals and the Wildcats defeated the Chippewas in a game delayed 43 minutes by lightning.

Ending weeks of mystery over Willie Tuitama’s successor, Arizona coach Mike Stoops started Matt Scott at quarterback ahead of fellow sophomore Nick Foles.

Scott completed 19 of 30 passes for 202 yards.

UCLA 33, San Diego State 14: At Pasadena, Calif., Kevin Prince passed for 176 yards and a touchdown in his college debut, the Bruins’ defense held the Aztecs in check after a shaky start and UCLA continued its domination of San Diego State with a victory.

Prince, who became just the second freshman to start a season opener for UCLA, completed 18 of 29 passes with two interceptions. He also lost a fumble.
