Truck hits 2-year-old on highway

By The Spokesman-Review

A 2-year-old Wilbur, Wash., boy walking on U.S. Highway 2 was struck by a pickup Monday night.

Jayvin K. Curo was in satisfactory condition Tuesday at Providence Sacred Heart Medical Center after being struck by a 2003 Chevrolet pickup near milepost 220, about a mile west of Wilbur, according to the Washington State Patrol.

The driver, 81-year-old David L. Sparks, of Moses Lake, was not charged in the crash, which occurred about 6:50 p.m. when he swerved to avoid the boy and sideswiped him, according to the WSP.

“I’m sure that’s not what he expected to see in the middle of the road,” said Trooper Troy Briggs.

The toddler was walking eastbound in the westbound lane.

Sparks was not injured, according to the state patrol.
