Region in brief: County will bury unidentified man

Spokane County will bury the body of a man it has tried unsuccessfully to identify for more than two years.

The county Medical Examiner’s Office said Wednesday it will bury the body Sept. 23 at Fairmont Cemetery. The badly decomposed body was found in the Spokane River in June 2007.

The man was estimated to have been between 5-foot-3 and 5-foot-6 and 130 and 180 pounds. He was at least partly African-American and had black hair. He had significant facial deformities, including jaw and nose fractures and a large scar over his left eyebrow, which came from incidents at least two years before his death in September 2006.

The body was kept in climate controlled storage for two years, but county officials say they’ve exhausted all possible leads. Fairmont Cemetery, Bitterroot Casket Co., Spokane Professional Transport and Hennessey Smith Funeral Home are discounting or donating goods and services to help defray the costs. Police Department Chaplain Beth Wilson will perform the services.

School evacuated after bomb threat

Students at Lakeside High School in Plummer, Idaho, were sent home Thursday after a bomb threat.

A person called in a threat to the school about 8:45 a.m., just after the start of the school day, said Plummer police Chief Les Hall.

Students were evacuated to the Coeur d’Alene Tribe Wellness Center, where they were released to their parents about 11 a.m.

The bomb squad from Fairchild Air Force Base searched the school. Nothing suspicious was found, Hall said.

The Federal Bureau of Investigation will obtain a subpoena for phone records to determine where the call came from, Hall said.

Student falls from UI fraternity house

A 19-year-old woman fell from the third story of a University of Idaho fraternity house early Thursday, the second such fall at UI in less than two weeks.

Amanda Andaverde was airlifted to Harborview Medical Center in Seattle “due to the severity of her injuries,” according to the Moscow Police Department.

Andaverde, a sophomore, fell about 27 feet from a window at the Sigma Alpha Epsilon fraternity house, 920 Deakin Ave., at 1:10 a.m., police said.

She was drunk, and there was a party at the fraternity house Wednesday night, said Assistant Police Chief David Duke. Andaverde’s condition at Harborview wasn’t available Thursday morning.

On Aug. 29, UI student Shane Meyer, 20, of Boise, fell three stories from a window of the Delta Tau Delta house. He remains in serious condition at Harborview.
