Back to the Constitution

The Spokesman-Review

In reply to M.A. Mentzer’s letter of Sept. 8, “Resist the nonsense,” I have a better idea for “allowing the USA to be great again.” How about if we forced our elected representatives, including President Obama, to read and abide by the original intent of the Constitution they swore to uphold?

In my opinion, Republican and Democratic lawmakers are equally responsible for the current sorry condition our country is in. The downward spiral started when our government decided years ago to start ignoring its constitutional boundaries and stick its nose into areas it had no business being involved in, for example: education, health care, retirement, social programs, banking and finance, and foreign aid.

Now our government has decided it has the authority to dictate to private businesses such as banks, insurance companies and the automakers. Our government is completely out of control and it’s due to its monstrous size and refusal to adhere to the supreme law of the land.

Patrick Henry said, “The Constitution is not an instrument for the government to restrain the people, it is an instrument for the people to restrain the government – lest it come to dominate our lives and interests.”
