Freeman’s Jansen wins two titles

Staff and news service reports

Maya Jansen, a sophomore at Freeman, brought home two championships to lead a successful showing by members of the Spokane Racquet Club at the U.S. Tennis Association Junior Sectionals last month in Beaverton, Ore.

Jansen, who finished second in the State 1A tournament last spring to sister Lea, won the girls 16 singles sectional title as the No. 1 seed and teamed with Elaine Baik of Mukilteo, Wash., to capture doubles in that age group as the No. 2 seeds.

In the singles final, Jansen overcame a first-game loss to get past second-seeded Audrionna Farr of Beaverton 3-6, 6-1, 7-6 (4). In doubles, Jansen and Baik beat an unseeded opponent 8-1 in the finals.

Sisters Maddison and Alexandra Bourguignon, who are home schooled, won the girls 12 and 14 championships, respectively, as No. 1 seeds. Maddison beat the No. 2 seed 6-3, 6-2 and Alexandra defeated the three seed 6-2, 6-4.

Spokane Racquet Club had two in the boys 14 division. Nikolas Cable, who was the fourth seed, lost in the singles semifinals and he and William Hough, who were seeded third, lost in the doubles semifinals. Hough was eliminated in the second round in singles. Both attend Royal Oaks.

Top-seeded Alex Earle and his adult partner, Jason Conrow, watched as Chris Gray and Cory Hultquist knocked off one opponent after another, but they wouldn’t yield to the fifth-seeded team. Earle and Conrow prevailed 382-355 in the Junior Bowlers Tour’s season-opening alumni tournament Aug. 30 at Valley Bowl.

Tony and Todd Beamer finished third, Cody and Bobby Ramelow were fourth and Thomas Locke and Mike Butler were fifth.

Megan Froman had high score for the girls, a 203. Ryan Gately was high for the boys with a 278. Best women’s score was Eryn Moran’s 235. Ramelow, Hultquist and Todd Dudley shot 278s to lead the men.

The JBT opener is today at Players & Spectators.
