Spokane-area public schools offer tutoring

Now that the school year is in full swing, students will be heading home with their fair share of homework.

Spokane Public Schools recently announced Supplemental Educational Services for this academic year.

The program provides tutoring in reading, language arts and math outside of school, before or after school, on weekends, and during school breaks. The federally funded service is being offered to students at Audubon and Willard elementary schools and Garry and Shaw middle schools who qualify for free or reduced-price lunch.

Tutoring may be provided in other languages as needed.

Informational fairs will be on Oct. 1 at the Northeast Community Center, 4001 N. Cook St., from 7 to 8:30 p.m., and on Oct. 6 at the West Central Community Center, 1603 N. Belt St., from 7 to 8:30 p.m.

Applications will be accepted until Oct. 31 and can be found at the listed middle schools or at www.SpokaneSchools.org.

Presenting miniplays

Students at St. George’s School, 2929 W. Waikiki Road, will present their musical “playlets” of “The Apple Tree” Friday and Saturday at 7 p.m. in the school’s Founder’s Theater.

The short stories are about people who get what they’ve wanted and find it wasn’t quite what they expected.

Tickets are $5 for general admission and $3 for students and people 65 and older. Tickets may be purchased at the door.

Christian school opens

Palisades Christian Academy, 1115 N. Government Way in Spokane, recently opened its new facility to students prekindergarten through 10th grade. The new school also has a learning center, enrolling children ages 12 months through 4 years.

Palisades is a Seventh-day Adventist school and currently has more than 140 students enrolled.

The grand opening and ribbon cutting will be next Thursday at 5:30 p.m. The public is invited to attend.

National Merit semifinalists

Spokane-area high school students were announced as semifinalists in the 2010 National Merit Scholarship Program.

The local students have been given the opportunity to continue to compete for approximately 8,200 National Merit Scholarships, worth more than $36 million. Approximately 15,000 semifinalists are expected to advance to the finalist level.

Spokane-area semifinalists include: Hannah Myers, of Ferris High School; Hana Alicic, James Dunlap, and Grant Oakley, all of Lewis and Clark High School; Mitchell Cain, of Mead High School; Lewis Lee, of Oaks Classical Christian Academy; Matei Alexianu, Austin Henderson and Howard Lee, all of St. George’s School; Amy Bestick, of University High School; and Christa Prentiss, who is home schooled.
