Baby, mom safe after Amber Alert

A 9-month-old girl and her teenage mother were reported safe Wednesday after Grant County sheriff’s deputies arrested the baby’s father in connection with a domestic assault on the mother.

The baby was found on Tuesday in the custody of her father, Kevin James Vielle, 18, of Moses Lake, at a home northeast of Moses Lake. Vielle was arrested, deputies said.

An Amber Alert had been issued during the search for the baby and Vielle.

After his arrest, the mother was placed in a safe house, and deputies asked the state’s Child Protective Services to hold the baby until an investigation could be completed, according to Undersheriff John Turley.

The 18-year-old mother told deputies the incident began Monday when Vielle assaulted her and forced her to drink Pine Sol, and if she did not, he would force the cleaning fluid down the child’s mouth. The woman said he took her and the baby to another home after the assault and then left with the baby, saying he would return the next day.

Deputies said the apparent assault was preceded by an accusation by Vielle that the mother was trying to poison him and the child.

The mother could not report the incident quickly because the residence where she was left had no telephone, Turley said. Deputies were contacted after the mother got to the county’s domestic violence and sexual assault shelter in Moses Lake. She had two black eyes and bruises on her arms, Turley said.
