In brief: Spokane County fire commissioner post open

VALLEYFORD – Spokane County Fire District 8 is looking for a commissioner.

District officials will take applications through 4 p.m. Sept. 30 for the commissioner position from which Jonathan Ferraiuolo resigned Aug. 31. The two remaining commissioners will appoint an interim replacement.

The appointee will have to stand for election in November 2010 to continue filling out the unexpired portion of Ferraiuolo’s six-year term, which expires Dec. 31, 2013.

Race for the Cure signup open

COEUR D’ALENE – It’s not too late to register for the Susan G. Komen Race for the Cure, at North Idaho College on Sept. 27 at 10 a.m.

The race is one of many Komen events to raise money and awareness for breast cancer.

Eat, drink to support literacy

MORAN PRAIRIE – “Double Shot,” an event to provide new books to kids sponsored by Page Ahead Children’s Literacy Program and Laguna Café, 4302 S. Regal St., is under way at the café. When coffee drinkers add a “literacy shot” to their drink, Laguna Café will donate a portion of the proceeds to Page Ahead’s Book for Kids Program.

“Dish Up Literacy” will be next Thursday at five Spokane restaurants. Proceeds will provide literacy services and more than 10,000 new books per year to Spokane’s at-risk children. Participating restaurants are: Northpointe Azteca, 9738 N. Newport Highway; Spokane Valley Azteca, 14700 E. Indiana Ave.; Hills’ Restaurant and Lounge, 401 W. Main Ave.; Laguna Café, 4302 S. Regal St.; and Perry Street Café, 1002 S. Perry St.

Auction Sept. 27 at St. John’s

ROCKWOOD – The 2nd Chance Extravaganza Benefit Auction will be held at the Cathedral of St. John the Evangelist, 127 E. 12th Ave., on Sept. 27 at 4:30 p.m.

The event will include a silent and live auction of new and used items, a catered dinner prepared by Chef Elijah Heser of the Davenport Hotel, along with beer, wine and a number of desserts.

Proceeds will benefit the Faith and Environment Network.

Tickets are $35 per person or $250 for a table of 8.
