Roundup: Wildcats turn back G-Prep

Ashley Berto and Delaney Zalud scored first-half goals Wednesday to lead Mt. Spokane (3-0) to a 2-0 win at Gonzaga Prep (3-1) in a Greater Spokane League girls soccer opener on Wednesday.

Both goals were set up by defensive errors. Carissa Yedica and Sammie Pedersen had the assists for the Wildcats.

In other GSL openers, Jackie Morden scored three times, including twice in the final 6 minutes, to give host Central Valley (2-3) a 3-2 win over East Valley. Morden tied the match at 74 minutes on a 1-on-1 play after a long pass. Her winner came from 6 yards out with 1 minute left. Amanda Bliesner scored at 24 minutes for the Knights (0-2), taking a long throw-in and going 1-on-1 with the keeper. … Jill Pecka fed Lindsey Pangborn for a 12-yard goal at 15 minutes and Mead (3-0) held off North Central 1-0 at Albi Stadium. Asia Porter made 17 saves for the Indians (1-2). … Kayla Olson snapped a 1-all tie with a goal at 30 minutes, and University (3-0) used a strong second half to pull away for a 4-1 win over Ferris at Albi. On the go-ahead goal, Kaitlen Parsons received a cross-field pass, made a run and fed Olson with a waist-high pass. Carrie Barber scored for the Saxons (1-3).

Boys soccer

Brett Dickman scored a pair of first-half goals, the first a chip-in at 20 minutes, as St. Maries (5-5, 3-1) posted a 4-0 home win over Priest River (0-3, 0-3) in the Intermountain League. Twins Shawn and Kendal McMillen teamed on a first-half goal.

Women’s soccer

Lindsey Oakes gathered in a rebounded shot off a defender and scored from 5 yards out with 15 minutes to play as visiting Whitworth (4-1) defeated Whitman 2-1 in a Northwest Conference opener at Walla Walla.

Oakes, a senior forward, assisted on the game-tying goal at 14 minutes, passing to freshman Mackenzie Grow (Lewis and Clark High) for her first collegiate score.

Kristin Innes scored in the sixth minute for the Missionaries (1-2-1).

Women’s volleyball

Freshman Aubree Chestnut (Post Falls) had five consecutive kills in the first game to power North Idaho College (15-2) to its eighth consecutive win, a 25-15, 25-11, 25-17 non-conference sweep of visiting Community Colleges of Spokane (10-6).

Men’s basketball

Tickets for the Cougar Hardwood Classic, matching Washington State and Louisiana State on Dec. 22, will be on sale Saturday.

The Cougars are 4-0 in the Hardwood Classic, played at Seattle’s KeyArena. They beat Montana State 70-51 last season.

Women’s golf

Beth Wrigley of Indian Canyon fired a 75 at MeadowWood and leads the SAWGA championships by 11 strokes heading into today’s final round at The Fairways.
