Pettitte back in rotation

Andy Pettitte came away from his regular bullpen session without any problems Friday before the Yankees opened a six-game road trip in Seattle, and the lefty is expected to start on Monday night in Anaheim against the A.L. West-leading Los Angeles Angels.

“Monday will be good. I’ll be happy when I get through Monday and don’t have any problems,” Pettitte said. “I want to stand on the mound in the sixth and seventh inning and still feel strong, and they have to come pull me. Not (that) I’m running on fumes like how I felt in (Baltimore) trying to get through that last inning there.”

Pettitte’s last scheduled start Wednesday was skipped because the veteran was experiencing tiredness in his pitching shoulder.

Delgado’s Mets tenure could be over

Carlos Delgado had another setback while rehabbing from right hip surgery and it appears increasingly unlikely that he’ll be able to return to the Mets’ lineup before the season ends.

Sidelined since May 11, Delgado tried again to run last weekend but his hip became inflamed. He said the recent soreness in his side and back was also related to the hip injury.

The 37-year-old Delgado can become a free agent after this season, his fourth in New York. Ravaged by injuries all year, the Mets might look for a younger and perhaps less expensive option at first base in 2010.

Clearing the bases

Angels manager Mike Scioscia and general manager Tony Reagins have spoken with Mike Port, baseball’s vice president for umpires, and Bob Watson, MLB’s vice president for discipline, after umpires said Angels coaches were “unprofessional and unbecoming” after two late close calls went against them in a 9-8 loss in Boston on Wednesday night. … Tim Wakefield made it through a bullpen session without any weakness in his legs, and Boston manager Terry Francona said the knuckleballer is on target to start Monday at Kansas City. Wakefield has experienced a strength deficiency in his legs, a condition related to the back problems that sent him to the disabled list for five weeks. … Baltimore rookie outfielder Nolan Reimold has been placed on the 15-day disabled list with tendinitis in his left Achilles tendon, ending his season.
