Health care sector fares well
I would like to respond to Doug Belcher’s letter of Sept. 15, essentially defending the health care industry. Frankly, they don’t need his help.
Major health care interests are spending $1.4 million a day in Washington, D.C., to defeat any meaningful health care reform. That amounts to $2,600 per day per member of the House and Senate. That spending has increased 140 percent in the past 10 years. In the meantime, tens of millions of Americans continue to go without health care insurance.
The health care industry is the top-ranked lobbying sector in the nation. Idaho U.S. Sen. Mike Crapo has received an average of $55,000 a year over the past eight years from health industries. All of these figures are available on the Internet and can be verified. Is it any wonder that America ranks at the bottom of industrialized nations in providing meaningful health care for its citizens?
