Hasselbeck among rash of injured Seahawks

SAN FRANCISCO – Jim Mora repeated himself before walking away from the podium, perhaps to convince himself of the message as much as his audience.

“We’re going to be OK,” the Seahawks coach said at the end of the news conference that followed his team’s 23-10 loss to the 49ers. “We’re going to be OK.”

But after seeing Matt Hasselbeck lying on the sideline for a couple minutes with an injury, after watching starter after starter go down, and after suffering through an injury-plagued 2008 season, it might be hard for Seahawks fans to believe Mora’s positive message. The team, however, can’t fall into that trap, Mora said.

“It makes perfect sense for the people out there to say, ‘Oh goodness, here we go again. Matt’s down, all these guys are hurt,’ ” Mora said. “But that’s not the feeling in the locker room. That’s not the feeling with this coach right here at all. Not one single bit does that creep into our environment.”

Hasselbeck, who missed nine games with back problems last season, took a shot to the back from linebacker Patrick Willis while diving toward the goal line on a scramble. However, the injury is to Hasselbeck’s ribs, not his back, Mora said.

Hasselbeck had X-rays, which came back negative, and also a CT scan, which Mora called inconclusive.

The Seahawks also lost linebacker Lofa Tatupu (hamstring), left tackle Sean Locklear (ankle), and cornerback Josh Wilson (ankle) to injuries. Tatupu’s injury is from the St. Louis game, but he tried to come back for Sunday’s game, lasting only the first series.
