Shadle girls cruise to win

The nationally ranked Shadle Park girls cross country team completed another dominant showing at the 3-mile Mountain West Classic, scoring 56 points to cruise past the rest of the field Saturday in Missoula.

Andrea Nelson took first place in 17 minutes, 53.65 seconds for the Highlanders, and Kendra Weitz and Katie Morris also finished in the top eight. Shadle’s closest competition was Bozeman, which tallied 101 points. Billings (Mont.) West was third with 223.

Four Greater Spokane League teams finished at the top of the boys race. Mead (130 points) beat out Lewis and Clark, Mt. Spokane and Gonzaga Prep for the team title. Nathan Weitz helped the Highlanders sweep the individual titles, winning in 14:58.44.

•Stanford Invitational: Squaring off against some of the top teams in the nation, the Ferris boys took fifth place at the 5,000-meter course in Palo Alto, Calif. Adam Thorne finished ninth to lead the Saxons, finishing in 15:48, while teammates Tim Colli and Perry Domini finished 35th and 43rd, respectively. Erik Olson of Novato (Calif.) won the individual title in 14:53 and Arcadia (Calif.) took the team title.

•Runners Soul/Erik Anderson Invite: In the 5,000-meter high school division of the race at Plantes Ferry Park in Spokane, Cheney’s Nash Springberry and Kinsey Gomez of Coeur d’Alene topped the field of local athletes. CdA’s Vikings almost swept the individual titles, but Cody Curtis finished .285 seconds off the pace of Springberry’s 17:03.496. The Vikings won the team title, as Curtis and David Norris finished in the top three to lead the way to a 41-point effort. Colville was second with 97 points. Gomez crossed the finish line all alone, as her time of 18:53.062 was well ahead of Hanford’s Erin Hegarty and Cheney’s Sanne Holland. Cheney won the girls title with 49 points.

•Bob Firman Invitational: Missing top runner Ben Johnston, who was ill, the North Central boys still managed 100 points and a second-place finish in the 5,000-meter run at Eagle Island State Park in Boise. NC’s Alexander Avila crossed the finish line in 10th place, followed by Vince Hamilton, who took 13th. Indians freshman Katie Knight bolstered NC’s score in the girls race, finishing in 18:45.72, good for fourth place.

The Timberlake girls won the Division II race with 86 points, led by Ashly George, who finished in 20:58.60.

•Wenatchee XC Invite: Central Valley finished second in the boys and girls 4,800-meter races at Walla Walla Point Park in Walla Walla. The Bears boys tallied 54 points, with Rudy Spencer, Kaden Woolf and Bryan Aguilar finishing eighth through 10th, respectively. Jamie Lambie led the CV girls in 19:55.46 to finish third behind champion Kea Paton of Cashmere and Danielle Friend of Ephrata.

Girls soccer

Lakeland (3-6-2, 1-2) and Lake City (4-2-4, 1-1-2) finished in a 1-1 deadlock in a match of Inland Empire League 4A and 5A opponents at Lake City. The Hawks scored first on a goal by Marisa Watson in the 27th minute. At the 56-minute mark, Lake City’s Makenzie Baer knotted the game on a goal past keeper Cambrae Steinke, who recorded seven saves.

•Pullman (6-0, 4-0) handled host Colville (1-4, 1-3) 3-1 in the Great Northern League’s only match of the day to keep its season-long unbeaten streak alive. Alexys Garcia scored two second-half goals and Niina Al-Hassan scored once and recorded an assist for the Greyhounds.

Boys soccer

A penalty kick goal in the 77th minute by Tryum Abakkem secured a 2-2 tie for host Lakeland (2-8-2, 0-2-0) against Lake City (3-4-2, 1-2-1) in non-league Inland Empire League action at Rathdrum. Abakkem, a native of Norway, scored both goals for the Hawks. Jimmy Mullar and Matt Lieggi had first-half goals for the Timberwolves.

Volleyball

Down 2-0 early in its match against Sandpoint (2-0), Lewiston (1-3) rallied from a 9-9 tie in the third game to win 14-25, 18-25, 25-23, 26-24, 15-10 in a non-league matchup of IEL teams in Lewiston. Savannah Blinn dominated the net for the Bengals, slamming 31 kills against the Bulldogs.

•Pullman (4-0) used its best defensive effort to sweep Colville 25-12, 25-15, 25-13 in a Great Northern League match. Stephanie Logan led the Greyhounds with 12 kills, while Cayley Byrne had 12 digs and Jordan Levenseller served up six aces. … Earlier, Colville (4-1) swept host Clarkston (2-3). Makayla Carr had eight kills, six digs and three aces for the Indians.

•Mead placed fourth in the 48-team California Beach Invitational in La Jolla, Calif. Mead was undefeated heading into the quarterfinals before being defeated by the tournament’s top-ranked team, Orange Lutheran.
