Roundup: Coug wins golf tourney

Washington State sophomore Trent Sanders shot a 1-under-par 71 in the final round Tuesday to win the Giustina Memorial Classic at the Trysting Tree Golf Club in Corvallis, Ore.

Sanders won his first tournament title with a three-round total of 9-under 207, edging John Taton of Oregon by one stroke.

The Cougars, leading after two rounds, slipped to second in the team race, finishing with an 11-under 853, nine strokes behind host Oregon State.

Austin Hurt of WSU finished eighth at 3-under 213.

•Gonzaga finished 10th in the Purple and Red Invitational at the Valley View Golf Course in Salt Lake City. The Bulldogs finished at 881 in the tightly packed field. Utah won at 867, defeating Arkansas-Little Rock in a playoff. Weber State was another stroke back. Levi Garcia of Cal State Bakersfield shot an 8-under 64 to grab medalist honors at 9-under 207 and two shots ahead of Jake Johnson of Sacramento State. Kyle Huss led the Bulldogs with an even-par 216 after a final-round 74.

Women’s golf

Washington State’s women combined for the second-best team score and moved up two spots to finish second in the Giustina Memorial Classic at Trysting Tree Golf Club in Corvallis, Ore.

The Cougars combined for a 300, just two strokes behind Oregon, which was the runaway winner. The Ducks had a three-day total of 896 while the Cougars finished at 921, five strokes in front of Wyoming.

Sophomore Kristen Allard led the Cougar charge with a 1-under 71, moving up 15 spots to finish 11th at 14-over 320. Freshman Ali Thompson of WSU was fifth overall at 10-over 226 after a final-day 75. Kendra Little of Oregon was the medalist after a 72 left her at 2-under 214. WSU freshman Emma Betland also finished in the top 10, tying for sixth at 227.

Volleyball

Layne Brosky had 10 kills and Kelsey Bashaw added 21 assists to guide the Gonzaga Bulldogs (4-8) to a 25-16, 25-21, 11-25, 25-15 non-conference win over the visiting Montana Grizzlies (5-9).

Cross country

Whitworth’s Nick Gallagher and Dana Misterek were named Northwest Conference athletes of the week for their efforts at last Saturday’s Erik Anderson Invitational at Plantes Ferry Park.

Gallagher completed the 8,000-meter course in 26 minutes, 20.89 seconds, sixth place overall and No. 1 among Division III athletes. Misterek won the women’s 5,000 in 19:04.59.
