Prep roundup: Trojans grab share of title

Danielle Meehan had seven kills and 11 digs as Post Falls earned a share of its first 5A Inland Empire League volleyball title by defeating visiting Coeur d’Alene in four games Tuesday.

The Trojans (5-0) were effective with the serve, finishing with 13 aces.

Four Post Falls players had two aces, including Meehan.

Jalayna White also had seven kills for the Trojans with Tori Bertcsch setting the attack with 16 assists. Miranda Todd and Shae Carson also had seven kills apiece for the Vikings (0-5), who got 33 digs from Randi Spencer.

In other IEL games, visiting Lakeland (1-2) pulled out a 27-25 win in the first game, but Moscow (1-2) swept the next three for the win as Brigitte Lowe had 13 kills and Amy Westberg had 16 digs. Alyana Watson had 16 digs for the Hawks and Jamie Quillin had 10 kills. … Piper Wahlin had 11 kills and 12 digs and Coco James had 24 assists as Sandpoint (3-0) swept visiting Lake City (3-2).

•Greater Spokane League: In just her second game back after ACL surgery, Allie Riggin had 27 kills as East Valley (2-3) won the last three games to win a tight five-game match with visiting Ferris (1-4). The Knights were down 14-10 before scoring the last five points, with Riggin having a string of four straight blocks before Alyssa Dorr’s kill finished it off. Dorr finished with 44 assists. Kirsten Harrison had 17 kills for the Saxons. … Sophomore setter Lindsay Stockton stepped in for an ill starter and had 20 assists to lead Gonzaga Prep (4-0) to a 3-0 sweep of visiting Shadle Park (0-5). Sammy Cassano led the way with nine blocks, Allison Reed had nine kills and Vanessa Karwaski had 11 digs. … Janele Vogt had 10 kills and Malea Web 24 assists as Lewis and Clark (3-1) posted the sweep at Rogers (0-4). … At Mt. Spokane, Mary Konis and Kenzie Reid each had 21 assists as the Wildcats (4-1) beat Central Valley – short-handed because of the flu – in four games. Taylor Forney had 20 assists for the Bears (2-2) and Kelsey Solberg had 13 digs. … At North Central, University (4-1) rallied from a 2-1 deficit to defeat the Indians (1-3) 3-2. The Titans, after dropping the third game 22-25, battled back to win 25-19 and then 15-12 in the decider. Jordon Bonertz led the winners with 16 kills, Jordan Schmerer had 28 digs and Jessica Moon 39 assists. Sam Hill was outstanding for NC with 16 blocks and 13 kills with Alicia Allen getting 29 digs.

•Great Northern League: Jana Vining, who splits time between the varsity and JV, had seven kills playing in only one game to pace Colville (5-1) to a three-game sweep of visiting Deer Park (1-4). … In a taut five-game match at Cheney, Clarkston (3-3) won the last two 25-20, after jumping to a 7-0 lead, and 18-16, rallying from a 12-10 deficit, to defeat the Blackhawks (1-4). Kellie McCann-Smith led Clarkston with 14 kills. Shaley Ham had a solid all-around effort for Cheney with 12 kills, 14 digs and three blocks. … At Pullman, outstanding serving led the Greyhounds (5-0) to a sweep of Medical Lake (0-5). Tera Weitz led the way with eight of the team’s 18 aces, at one point in the second game serving 17 consecutive points. … At Riverside, Bailey Wold pounded 13 kills and Mallorie Schoesler had 35 assists as West Valley (4-1) swept the Rams (2-3).

•Intermountain League: Chelsea Linton had 23 assists and Taylor Stewart had nine digs as Priest River (4-1) went on the road to sweep Timberlake (0-4) at Spirit Lake.

Cross country

•Great Northern League: Colville boys and girls swept at Riverside’s Bear Lake County Park. Behind a 1-2-3 finish by Ned Fisher, Colton Hastings and Jake Nielson, the Indians easily outdistanced the Rams 17-40 and Clarkston 16-42. Fisher won the 3-mile race in 16 minutes, 53 seconds – 17 seconds in front of Hastings. Riverside defeated Clarkston 22-39. Among girls, Jess Mildes raced to a 12-second win in 20:56, but Colville, led by Alison Price, took the next three spots. The Indians edged the Rams 25-30 and beat the Bantams 20-39. Riverside beat Clarkston 20-41. … At Pullman, Deer Park swept the Greyhounds and Medical Lake in both boys and girls competition. Reggie Peone and Daniel Amann went 1-2 for the Stag boys, who beat Pullman 19-36 and ML 18-43. Peone’s time was 18:36, 25 seconds ahead of his teammate. Jessica Duenich of Deer Park finished in 21:54 to win the girls race by 34 seconds. The Stags beat Pullman 19-46 and the Cardinals 16-46. Both Pullman teams beat ML. … Cheney’s boys and girls went on the road to defeat West Valley, winning 18-25 and 25-31, respectively. The Blackhawks also had the individual winners, Nashua Springberry leading a 1-4 sweep in the boys with a run of 17:31. Sanne Holland won the girls race in 19:48.

•Inland Empire: Charlie Redline scored 4 minutes into the game and Post Falls (7-3-2, 4-1) held on to defeat visiting Lake City (4-5-2, 1-3-1) 1-0. … In a non-league game between IEL teams, Anders Nostahl scored two first half goals to rally Sandpoint (9-1-2) to a 3-1 win over visiting Coeur d’Alene (8-2-4).

Girls soccer

•Great Northern League: Kellie Zakrzewski scored two unassisted goals, the first coming at 4 minutes, to lead Cheney (6-1, 4-1) to a 3-1 victory at Colville (1-5, 4-1). … Kaitlin Stoop knocked home a loose ball in the 74th minute to give Deer Park (3-3, 3-2) a 1-0 win at Riverside (0-6, 0-5). … DeeDee Garbe scored four goals and had three assists as West Valley (5-1, 4-1) rolled to an 8-0 win at Clarkston (0-6, 0-5). … Pullman’s game at Medical Lake was postponed until today because of illness.

•Inland Empire League: Marly Elmer and Michelle Snow scored in the first 20 minutes as Lake City (5-2-4, 2-1-2) blanked visiting Post Falls (3-9, 1-4) 2-0. … Moscow (5-7-1, 1-3) scored in the 65th minute to earn a 1-1 tie with visiting Lewiston (4-5-4, 1-2-2).
