Churches plan for Holy Week

Area churches are celebrating Easter and other Holy Week observances throughout the weekend.

Mission Community Presbyterian Church, 2103 E. Mission Ave., will open its doors for prayer today from noon to 12:45 p.m. and Friday from noon to 3.

The church will hold a Maundy Thursday service today at 7 p.m., and Easter Sunday service at 10 a.m.

First Covenant Church, 212 S. Division St., will offer a Good Friday service at 5:30 p.m.

The Easter Sunday service will be at 10:30 a.m.

St. Mark’s Lutheran Church, 316 E. 24th Ave., will present a Maundy Thursday service today at 7 p.m. The service will include Holy Communion and foot washing.

The church’s Good Friday service will be at 7 p.m. with reflection and intercession.

There will be an Easter Vigil service Saturday at 7 p.m., which will be a service of light, baptism and Holy Communion.

Easter Sunday services will be at 8, 9:30 and 11 a.m. and will include special music for choir, organ, brass and timpani.

Child care will be available.

Christ the King Anglican Church, 1717 W. Sixth St., will offer a Maundy Thursday service today at 7 p.m.; a Good Friday service at 7 p.m.; Easter Vigil service Saturday at 7 p.m. and an Easter Sunday service at 10 a.m.

St. Stephen’s Episcopal Church, 5720 S. Perry St., will present a Maundy Thursday liturgy at 7 p.m. There will also be a vigil held until noon.

The Good Friday services will include the Stations of the Cross at noon and a Good Friday liturgy at 7 p.m.

There will be a Great Vigil of Easter at 7 p.m. on Holy Saturday.

Easter Sunday will include choral Eucharist services at 8 and 10:15 a.m.

Summit Ridge Christian Fellowship, which meets at 5607 S. Freya St., will present Easter Sunday worship services at 8 and 10 a.m.

•The Spokane Dream Center, a nondenominational church in Spokane Valley, will present “Behold Jesus,” an Easter drama Saturday at 6:30 p.m. at the INB Performing Arts Center, 334 W. Spokane Falls Blvd.

The performance is free.

•The Episcopal Cathedral of St. John the Evangelist, 127 E. 12th Ave., will offer a 24-hour prayer vigil today at noon, soup supper at 6 and Maundy Thursday Eucharist service at 7.

On Good Friday, the church will present liturgy at noon, Meditations on the Passion of Christ at 1 p.m., the Stations of the Cross at 2 and a candlelight service at 7.

The Great Vigil of Easter will be Saturday at 7 p.m. Attendees should bring a bell to ring at the Acclamation.

On Easter Sunday, there will be Holy Eucharist celebrating the Feast of the Resurrection at 8:30 and 11 a.m.

St. John’s Lutheran Church, 5810 S. Meadowlane Road, will offer Holy Communion during Maundy Thursday service today at 7 p.m.

There will be a Service of Darkness on Good Friday at 7 p.m.

Easter Sunday events will include a sunrise service with the church choir at 7 a.m., Easter potluck breakfast at 8 and 10 a.m. worship with the choir and a children’s message.

Holy Trinity Greek Orthodox Church, 1703 N. Washington St., will offer the Vesperal Divine Liturgy today at 9:30 a.m. The liturgy will commemorate Christ’s last meal with His disciples and His establishing of the Eucharist.

There will be a Service of the Passion today at 7 p.m. which will include 12 readings from the Gospels. The service will be followed by a procession with an icon of the Crucified Christ.

The church will observe the Royal Hours Friday at 9:30 a.m. Attendees will keep vigil at the cross, recount the story of the crucifixion and after the service, the church will prepare the representation of Christ’s tomb.

There will be the Vespers of the Unnailing Friday at 3:30 p.m., which re-enacts taking down Christ’s body from the cross, and the Lamentations at 7 p.m.

There will be a Vesperal Divine Liturgy Saturday at 9 a.m. which will be the beginning of the church’s proclamation of joy of Christ’s victory over sin, death and the devil.

The church will offer a vigil at 11 p.m. Saturday and a Resurrection service at 11:45.

Finally, the church will observe Agape Vespers at 11 a.m. Easter Sunday.

Grief support group

Life Center Church, 1202 N. Government Way, will offer “Journey from Mourning to Joy” an 11-week, Bible-based class and support group starting Tuesday at 7 p.m.

The course is $30.
