In brief: EWU library sale coming up

CHENEY – If you are looking for a good book or DVD or CD or sheet music or puzzle, there will be thousands of them – all at bargain prices – at the Eastern Washington University Friends of the Library used books and recordings sale April 9 and 10.

The sale will take place in the lobby of the JFK Library on EWU’s campus in Cheney from 8 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. April 9, and from noon to 4 p.m. on April 10.

Hardback books and DVDs cost $2 each, paperbacks and sheet music are 50 cents, CDs and LPs are $1. All day Saturday, it’s $10 per bag of books.

Each year EWU Libraries replaces many items in its collection and sells its replaced books and recordings to the public, along with items donated for the annual spring sale.

Icelandic banks topic of lecture

WHITWORTH/ SPOKANE COUNTY – Whitworth University will offer a Great Decisions Lecture, “Iceland in the Global Financial Crisis,” by Hjalmar W. Hannesson, next Thursday at 7:30 p.m. in the Robinson Teaching Theatre in Weyerhaeuser Hall.

Icelandic banks were hit the hardest by the global financial crisis. When all of the major banks collapsed, it posed significant challenges for the government and society in Iceland.

Whitworth’s 2010 Endowed English Reader David Daniel, author of “Seven-Star Bird” and director of the undergraduate creative writing program at Fairleigh-Dickinson University, will join the English department for an evening of poetry on April 9 in the Robinson Teaching Theatre in Weyerhaeuser Hall at 7:30 p.m.

Both events are free and open to the public.

‘Anne Frank’ at StageWest

CHENEY – StageWest Community Theatre of the West Plains, 639 Elm St., will honor Mieb Gies, the brave woman who put her own life in jeopardy when she helped hide Albert Dussel and the Frankand Van Daan Families, in “The Diary of Anne Frank.”

The performances will be April 9, 16 and 23 at 7 p.m.; April 10, 17 and 24 at 7 p.m.; and April 11 and 18 at 3 p.m.

Tickets are $10 per person. Donations of a nonperishable food item are also requested.

Tickets can be purchased at the Owl Pharmacy in Medical Lake and Cheney, online at www.stagewestct.org or at the door.

Classes offer help for homebuyers

EMERSON/GARFIELD – Community Frameworks, located at 315 W. Mission Ave., will continue its classes designed to help potential homebuyers better understand credit, personal finances and mortgage lending on April 14 at 6 p.m.

The series will continue with “Managing Your Finances” and “Mortgage Basics” on April 28, both at 6 p.m.

On April 26, Community Frameworks will also host a self-help homeownership informational meeting at 6 p.m.
