Sasquatch sweep Knights

The Community Colleges of Spokane Sasquatch opened Northwest Athletic Association of Community Colleges play by sweeping a doubleheader from the Wenatchee Valley Knights at Spokane Falls CC on Wednesday afternoon.

In the opener, Cam Christian had three of his four hits on the day, including a home run, and Jake Graham chipped in a couple of singles to help the Sasquatch (14-4 overall, 2-0 NWAACC) come from behind to post a 7-4 victory.

Martin Aguirre allowed three runs – one earned – in six innings of work to pick up the win for CC Spokane.

The Sasquatch trailed 3-1 before pushing across three runs in the bottom of the fifth inning.

Sasquatch reliever Dillon Watkins pitched the final three innings to notch the save.

In the second game, starter Chris Allen and relievers Jordan Wilson and Justin Murphy held the Knights (3-12, 0-2) in check en route to a 4-2 victory.

Ethan Flory smacked a triple and a double and Taylor Hustad pitched in with a couple of hits to lead the Sasquatch at the plate.

CC Spokane scored twice in the bottom of the eighth inning – after Wenatchee Valley scored a run in the top of the inning to knot the score at 2-all – to pull out the victory.

Track and field

The Idaho Vandals men had a pair of runners place in the top six in the 800-meter run after the first day of the Texas Relays in Austin.

James Clark finished fifth with a time of 1 minute, 52.32 seconds. Teammate Josh Dalton crossed the finish line in sixth with a time of 1:53.27.

Awards

The Whitworth Pirates had a trio of athletes earn Northwest Conference player of the week honors for their respective sports.

Junior Rachel Burns – who plays singles and doubles – was honored in women’s tennis after leading the Pirates to a 4-1 record last week – including three victories over teams ranked in the region.

Freshman Heather Hesselgesser was honored as the top offensive player in softball as Whitworth won seven of eight games. Hesselgesser hit at a .571 clip. She had three doubles, two home runs, four stolen bases and 14 runs batted in.

Junior Jessica Mangis was honored as the pitcher of the week in softball. She made four appearances and posted a pair of compete-game shutouts. She also picked up a victory as a reliever and earned her second save of the season.
