Roundup: Mortellaro’s streak ends

Idaho’s Kayla Mortellaro saw her string of tournament wins snapped at two, but she still earned a top-five finish, scoring a final-round 75 Tuesday at the Wyoming Cowgirl Classic in Scottsdale, Ariz.

Mortellaro finished tied for fifth with a score of 220, 4 over par at the par-72 6,108-yard Ocotillo Golf Club. Her score led the Vandals to a sixth-place finish with a score of 908, off the pace of champion UTEP, which scored an 883.

Gonzaga took ninth in the tournament, scoring 921. GU’s Jessica Howe and Rachel Sibbett logged identical scores of 227 for the tournament, with Sibbett shooting a 73 and Howe a 72.

Eastern Washington’s Kellie Holmstedt shot 241.

Baseball

Forrest Snow held Gonzaga to three hits over five innings and visiting Washington (15-11) edged Gonzaga (11-16) 3-1 in nonconference play at Patterson Sports Complex.

Track and field

The Western Athletic Conference honored two Idaho athletes, giving Paul Dittmer the men’s track athlete of the week and Ulrike Hartz the women’s field athlete of the week.

•Two Whitworth women swept the Northwest Conference track and field athlete of the week awards. Mead graduate Tonya Turner earned the track athlete of the week award. Erica Cox was named field athlete of the week.

Softball

Sydnee Jerome threw a complete-game shutout in the opener and earned the save in the second game as Wenatchee Valley (15-2, 8-0 NWAACC) swept Community Colleges of Spokane (4-15, 3-5) 1-0, 4-2 in Wenatchee.

Men’s golf

Jason Azzarito led Gonzaga with an even-par 70 in his final round to help the Bulldogs to a 12th-place finish at the Wyoming Cowboy Classic in Scottsdale, Ariz.

Azzarito finished with a 217 at the 7,133-yard, par 70 Talking Stick Golf Course. Teammate Kevin Parkhurst was one stroke back at 218.

Basketball

Washington State’s Reggie Moore and Elias Harris from Gonzaga were both named to the CollegeInsider.com Freshman All-America team. Moore’s teammate, DeAngelo Casto, also earned a spot on the Lefty Driesell Defensive All-America Team.
