Charged A Middlesex (Mass.) Superior Court grand jury Thursday indicted Mark Kerrigan, 45, brother of figure skater Nancy Kerrigan, for manslaughter in the Jan. 24 death of their 70-year-old father in what prosecutors called a drunken rage during a trivial argument over use of the family telephone.
Hired Iona hired Tim Cluess as its men’s basketball coach. Cluess coached Division II C.W. Post to a 98-23 mark over four years, including a school-record 30 victories two seasons ago. Cluess is also a former player at St. John’s who played pro ball in Europe and Australia.
Released Six Slovenian ice hockey players who beat up their American coach after winning a league title were released by the team. Mike Posma, a former American Hockey League player who took over as coach last year, was beaten up by his players Saturday following Acroni Jesenice’s celebrations for winning the title. The 42-year-old New Jersey native was cut and bruised but not seriously injured.
Sidelined Seattle Sounders FC midfielder Nate Jaqua is expected to miss at least another month following abdominal surgery. Jaqua is entering his ninth MLS season. He started 27 of his 28 games for Seattle last season and scored a career-high nine goals.
•Serena Williams has withdrawn from the Family Circle Cup in Charleston, S.C., because of the left knee injury that has sidelined her since she won the Australian Open. The green clay tourney begins this weekend and will be played without three of the world’s top 30 women’s tennis players. Top-ranked Williams, 2009 tourney champion Sabine Lisicki, and three-time Grand Slam champion Maria Sharapova have also pulled out.
Negotiating New Orleans Hornets majority owner George Shinn is negotiating to sell his stake in the NBA club to south Louisiana businessman Gary Chouest, who has owned 25 percent of the team since 2007. Shinn has been either the sole or majority owner of the Hornets since the club’s inception in Charlotte in 1988.
Out Head men’s basketball coach Fred Hill appears to be out at Rutgers after four seasons. Hill was informed by the university that he wouldn’t be retained because of multiple violations of the conduct clause in his contract.
