Gonzaga opens WCC play with win

Cody Martin allowed just one run and three hits while striking out six in 71/3 innings as Gonzaga (12-17) held off San Francisco (15-15) 3-2 in a West Coast Conference opener in San Francisco.

Royce Bolinger’s RBI single in the fourth inning put the Zags on the board, bringing home Mark Castellitto, and Andy Hunter’s two-run double gave GU a 3-0 lead after the fifth.

USF started to rally with runs in the sixth and eighth innings off Martin, but Billy Moon (University High) pitched 12/3 innings of scoreless relief to earn the save.

Arizona 7, Washington 2: Kurt Heyer picked up his fifth win of the season, holding the host Huskies (16-12, 2-2 Pac-10) to two runs on four hits in 62/3 innings and the Wildcats (21-8, 3-4) chased UW starter Geoff Brown after five innings, getting to Brown for six runs on seven hits.

Steve Selksy doubled and homered for the fifth time this season for Arizona, while Rafael Valenzuela added a pair of RBIs.
