Coug wins 800

Central Valley graduate Anna Layman led Washington State on the second day of the Rafer Johnson/Jackie Joyner-Kersee Invitational, winning the 800-meter run in a season-best time of 2 minutes, 5.7 seconds Saturday at Drake Stadium in Los Angeles.

The junior finished less than 2 seconds off her personal best of 2:04.03.

J Hopkins set a PR for the second straight day in the hurdles, taking fourth in the men’s 400 in a time of 52.71.

•Seven Washington State women won events at the WAR III meet, led by Kendall Mays, who won the pole vault with a personal best of 12 feet, 111/2 inches at Spokane Falls CC.

Teamed up against seven squads from Oregon, Idaho and Montana, the eight Washington teams prevailed with combined scores of 451.17 in the men’s and 404.83 in the women’s events.

Eastern Washington senior Nicole Luckenbach broke her school record in the hammer throw for the second straight day, tossing 199-2 to shatter her throw of 193-0 Friday.

Baseball

Merrill Kelly went seven innings, allowing four runs on seven hits, and No. 1 Arizona State (28-2, 6-2 Pac-10) collected 13 hits against Washington State (16-11, 2-3), knocking off the Cougars 11-7 and evening the three-game series at one game apiece in Pullman.

Michael Weber led the Cougars with three hits, including two doubles, and two RBIs, but ASU put things away with a six-run sixth inning that gave the Sun Devils a 10-1 advantage.

•Miles Kizer belted a grand slam in the fifth inning and Washington (17-12, 3-2 Pac-10) won its 10th game in its last 12 attempts, blowing by Arizona (21-9, 3-5) 10-2 in Seattle.

Staked to a 3-0 lead after the second inning, UW starter Andrew Kittredge (Ferris HS) held down the Wildcats bats, allowing two runs on six hits in seven innings while striking out three.

•Corey Moore had two doubles and tallied five hits with three RBIs as Pacific Lutheran (21-6, 11-2) swept a pair of Northwest Conference games from Whitworth (9-12, 5-8), 17-7 and 8-5 in Parkland, Wash.

Sophomore Landon Scott led the Pirates in both games, hitting a pair of home runs in the opener with five RBIs and adding an RBI double in the second game.

•Derek Carley’s walk-off double in the 10th inning secured a 2-1 victory for Community Colleges of Spokane in the opener of its doubleheader against Big Bend CC (6-18, 1-7 NWAACC) at SFCC. Ethan Flory followed that with late-inning heroics in the second game, as his ninth-inning double secured a 3-2 victory for CCS.

Justin Murphy and Dillon Watkins earned wins in relief stints for the Sasquatch (16-8, 4-4).

•San Francisco (16-15, 1-1 West Coast Conference) had three players collect at least four RBIs and tallied 22 hits to take the opener 20-9 against Gonzaga (12-18, 1-1) in San Francisco.

Looking to take the series in the second game, the Bulldogs jumped out to a 2-0 lead after seven innings.

USF rallied to tie the game after eight. After 12 innings, play was suspended with the sunlight fading. Play will resume today at noon.

Softball

Amanda Krier hit a go-ahead RBI single in the top of the seventh to lift North Idaho (27-21, 20-16 SWAC) to a 7-6 win over Western Nevada (5-33, 4-28) in the opener and NIC collected 17 hits in the second contest, winning 16-0 to earn the sweep in Carson City, Nev.

Krier added two hits in the second game, including a home run, while Lauren Maloney added a homer and finished the day with six hits, three RBIs and four runs.

•Stephanie Chrystal had three hits, three runs and an RBI as Community Colleges of Spokane (8-15, 7-5 NWAACC) won the second game 9-5 against Treasure Valley CC (8-10, 5-5) to salvage a split after dropping the opener 5-2 at SFCC.

Janelle Spear added two hits in the second game, including a two-run double during a four-run third inning that gave the Sasquatch a 6-2 lead. Amanda Edwards took control from there, earning the win while allowing five runs on six hits in seven innings.

•Brittany Wisner scored the winning run on a wild pitch in the bottom of the seventh inning to lift Whitworth (13-12, 7-10 NWC) to a 7-6 win in the second game as the Pirates swept a pair from Lewis & Clark, taking the opener 10-2 at Dana Marks Field in Spokane.

Jessica Mangis earned the win in the first game, pitching a five-inning, complete game, allowing two runs on three hits and striking out six. She added the final run during a six-run fifth inning that helped the Pirates pull away.

•For the second straight day, Danielle Lawrie shut down No. 2 Arizona, holding the Wildcats (32-6, 2-3 Pac-10) to two hits as No. 1 Washington earned the 7-0 victory in Seattle.

The Huskies (32-3, 4-1) opened things up with a four-run second before Jerrin Fa’asua’s three-run homer in the sixth put away Arizona. Lawrie cruised for the second straight day against the nation’s most prolific offense, striking out 12 in the shutout.

Rowing

For the second consecutive race, the No. 14 Washington State women’s varsity 8 upended a higher-ranked crew as the Cougars held off No. 9 Washington to win by a margin of 1.4 seconds on the Montlake Cut in Seattle.

The Cougars finished in 6:29.50 to defeat the Huskies a week after edging out Harvard in San Diego.

•With calmer conditions on the Potomac River for the second day of the George Washington Invitational Regatta, the Gonzaga men’s varsity 8 improved from Friday’s loss to win both its duals in Washington, D.C.

The Bulldogs beat Holy Cross in the morning race, finishing in 5:32.8. Later in the day, they took down MIT with a 1.3-second gap, finishing the course in 5:44.1.
