Girl plays boys lacrosse; coach penalized

Associated Press

BOISE – A southwestern Idaho girl lacrosse player who wants to compete with the boys is at the center of a face-off between the team that supports her efforts and the league that has banned her from taking the field.

Sara Maras’ coach at Borah High School in Boise has already been suspended for putting the sophomore into a junior varsity game last month, and Treasure Valley Lacrosse League officials say they may take additional action if she plays again.

The league’s board in February denied Maras’ petition to play boys lacrosse.

But Borah coach Erik Jones put Maras into a game anyway and says the team is adamant she play.

Borah’s board plans to meet Thursday to discuss Maras’ future.

Maras tells the Idaho Statesman that she prefers the more physical version of the game played by boys teams because she considers it a higher level than the girls game.
