In brief: Free car seat safety inspections

HAYDEN – Safe Kids Kootenai County will partner with Panhandle Health District for free car seat inspections at the health district office8500 N. Atlas Road, from 1 to 4 p.m. April 19.

A limited number of new car seats will be available to those who qualify, for a minimum $5 donation.

Kootenai Health will also host “Darkness to Light: Stewards of Children,” a workshop for adults on how to prevent and help stop sexual abuse of children, at Kootenai Medical Center, from 6 to 9 p.m. that night.

The course is free and open to the public. Preregistration is required.

Lecture to explore sex-related law

COEUR D’ALENE – C.L. Lindsay III, an expert in the field of student rights and academic freedom, will present “Sex and the Law” on Tuesday in the Edminster Student Union Building Lake Coeur d’Alene Room at North Idaho College at 7 p.m.

The lecture will cover issues of statutory rape, criminal transmission of sexually transmitted disease, public nudity, voyeurism and contraception law.

The presentation is sponsored by the Associated Students of NIC Office of Student Events.

Center offers free skin cancer checks

COEUR D’ALENE – The Kootenai Cancer Center, located in the Interlake Medical Building at 700 Ironwood Drive, will offer free skin cancer screenings on April 24, from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m.

Oncologists from Kootenai Cancer Center and health care providers with North Idaho Dermatology will be on hand for short examinations and to recommend courses of action if necessary.

Space is limited. Reservations can be made beginning Monday at (208) 666-3148.

10th Earth Day Fair set for Saturday

COEUR D’ALENE – The 10th annual Earth Day Fair will be Saturday at the Harding Family Center, 411 N. 15th St., from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.

Fair events include composting with Laura Laumatia; canning with Sharon Bosley; worm composting with Sorensen Elementary School; Coeurly Q’s Square Dancing; Sorenson Elementary School drumming; arts and crafts; vendors; and an Earth Day raffle.

The fair is free.

On April 22, Earth Day Coeur d’Alene will have a luncheon and recycling awards ceremony at North Idaho College.

The keynote address will include discussing Kootenai County Solid Waste Department initiatives such as waste-to- energy and single-stream recycling.

Job fair welcomes all kinds of seekers

COEUR D’ALENE – Job seekers in North Idaho are invited to the spring job fair at the Kootenai County Fairgrounds Wednesday, from noon to 6 p.m.

Local business owners will be on hand to help those looking for a better career, re-entering the work force or beginning their career.

The event is free and open to the public. Free parking is available.

License office closed April 22-23

POST FALLS – The Post Falls Vehicle License office will be closed April 22 and 23 because of an Idaho Transportation Department title, tax and registration training workshop.

The office will reopen on April 26 at 8:30 a.m.

Child care group hosts workshop

COEUR D’ALENE – The Coeur d’Alene Childcare Commission, in conjunction with the Coeur d’Alene Fire Department, will host a workshop for child care providers on April 26 from 6:30 to 8:30 a.m. at the City Hall’s former council chambers, 710 E. Mullan Ave.

The course will offer hands-on use of a fire extinguisher as well as instructions on preparing evacuation and safety plans.

Mountain benefit next Sunday

RATHDRUM – Friends of Rathdrum Mountain will have its third annual “Toast to the Mountain” fundraiser next Sunday at the Westwood Saloon, 8162 Main St., at 6:30 p.m.

The annual meeting will include live music and hors d’oeuvres.

Tickets are $10 per person and may be purchased at Stein’s Market in Rathdrum, the Westwood Saloon or from Friends of Rathdrum Mountain board members.

Medical response volunteers sought

ROSE LAKE – The Rose Lake Quick Response Unit, a nontransport emergency medical service to the Cataldo, Rose Lake and Medimont area, is looking for volunteers. The unit responds to approximately 80 calls per year.
