Roundup: Cougs top ASU

Washington State defeated top-ranked Arizona State 9-5 on Sunday in Pullman for the Cougars’ first series win against the Sun Devils in school history.

Nine Cougars (17-11, 3-3 Pac-10) recorded hits, and Derek Jones and Matt Argyropoulos each drove in two runs.

Connor Lambert (2-1) earned the win in relief of starter David Stilley. Lambert came on in the fourth inning with WSU leading 5-4 with one out and runners at the corners and ended the threat. He didn’t allow a base runner over his 2 2/3 innings.

•Pacific Lutheran completed a three-game sweep of Whitworth with an 18-10 Northwest Conference victory in Parkland, Wash.

Dan Belet had a two-run double and Landon Scott had a two-run single for Whitworth (8-21, 5-10 NWC).

•Arizona hit three home runs in its 9-1 Pac-10 win over Washington in Seattle.

Huskies freshman Adam Climber (2-2) took the loss in his second career start. He allowed four runs – three earned – over four innings.

Doug Cherry’s sacrifice fly drove in the only run for Washington (17-13, 3-3 Pac-10).

•Rain forced the suspension of the final game of the West Coast Conference series between Gonzaga University and the University of San Francisco Sunday. A tentative makeup date has been set for May 13.

Golf

Whitworth’s men’s team won the Northwest Conference Spring Classic in Moses Lake, while the women finished second in Yakima.

The Pirate men finished at 16-over 592, 10 strokes ahead of second-place Linfield, and tied Linfield atop the NWC men’s golf standings with 15 points. Whitworth’s Cameron Whittle shot a 1-under 143 to tie for first place.

The Whitworth women, in first place after the first round, were overtaken by George Fox. The Pirates finished at 96-over 672, seven strokes behind the Bruins. Emily Travis was the top finisher for Whitworth, with her 18-over 162 good for second place.

•The Washington State women finished 17th at the Ping ASU Invitational in Tempe, Ariz., posting a 69-over 933. Emma Betland was the top finisher for the Cougars, shooting a 14-over 230 for the tournament and finishing in 64th place.

Softball

Heather Hesselgesser had five hits and five RBIs on the day as Whitworth swept a Northwest Conference doubleheader with Lewis & Clark, winning 9-1 and 7-5 in Spokane.

Jessica Mangis (8-3) earned the win for the Pirates (15-2, 9-10 NWC) in the first game, allowing one run on five hits over six innings. Reliever Alyssa Bergquist won the second game, allowing two runs on four hits over 3 1/3 innings.

•Top-ranked Washington (33-3, 5-1 Pac-10) completed its first three-game sweep of Arizona with a 9-3 win over the No. 2 Wildcats in Seattle.

Danielle Lawrie (23-1) won her fifth straight conference game and allowed just four runs in 21 innings while striking out 39 during the series.

Fishing

Joey Nania of Liberty Lake, a two-time Junior Bassmaster world champion, began his professional bass fishing career with a ninth-place finish in the BASS Central Open Professional Tournament on Lake Amistad in Del Rio, Texas.
