Sports in brief: Annual fishing section inside

Outdoors: Fishing 2010, The Spokesman-Review’s annual update on fishing prospects, rules and opportunities throughout the Inland Northwest, is inserted in today’s paper.

The tabloid includes a map of all the fishing lakes and streams in the region, including the game fish species they hold.

Judge gives Leaf probation

Football: Former NFL quarterback Ryan Leaf has been sentenced to 10 years of probation after pleading guilty to eight felony drug charges in Texas.

State District Judge John B. Board sentenced Leaf on Wednesday in Amarillo. Leaf also was fined $20,000. He pleaded guilty to seven counts of obtaining a controlled substance by fraud and one count of delivery of a simulated controlled substance.

Leaf, speaking to reporters after the hearing, said “deep in my heart I knew I had a problem” even as he continued to use prescription pain medication.

Leaf, who has been living in Canada, was a star at Washington State but a bust during his four-year NFL career.

He then coached quarterbacks at West Texas A&M in Canyon. He resigned in November 2008.

Leaf was indicted in May 2009.

Cougars lose Kiki Moore

Women’s basketball: The Washington State women’s basketball team added a player but lost a pair, including All-Pac-10 freshman Kiki Moore.

In addition to Moore, a 5-foot-8 guard who was among the national leaders in steals and was second on the team in scoring at 12 points a game, sophomore Danielle LeNoir is also leaving. Moore, who started all 30 games, is from San Francisco and LeNoir, who averaged 2.9 points in 29 games, is from Los Angeles.

The new Cougar is Rosetta Adzasu, a 5-5 guard from West Linn, Ore.
