Bicyclist seriously injured after car hits him
A bicyclist on Cheney-Plaza Road was seriously injured Thursday evening when he was struck by a car in the southbound lane of the road two miles south of Cheney.
Theodore Chauvin, 36, suffered a broken leg and shoulder and was taken to a Spokane hospital for treatment.
A previous report incorrectly indicated that Chauvin was riding in the wrong lane, against traffic. The Spokane County Sheriff’s Office said today that Chauvin was riding in the correct lane.
Under state traffic law, bicyclists are required to obey the same rules as motorists.
Chauvin was hit about 6:15 p.m. by a 1997 Kia Sophia driven by William Knight Jr., 47, of the Williams Lake area. Knight told deputies he attempted to avoid the bicyclist.

The driver shouldn’t have admittied anything.
I hope the biker is alright and I hope the driver gets a huge ticket.

“The driver shouldn’t have admittied anything”. His lawyer didn’t get to him in time.
Another reason why bike lanes need to be separate from car lanes.
You never hear of a bicyclist hitting a car do you?

Actually, I was witness to a bicyclist hitting a car. The bicyclist was on a bike path, coming up to a street, where there was a stop sign on the bike path. He blew through the stop sign and wound up flying over the hood of the car. He wasn’t seriously hurt, although his bike was a little worse for wear. He got up and rode off. The poor lady in the car was visibly shaken.

Bike lanes usually do not facilitate the needs of cyclists who use the bicycle for utilitarian efforts. The lanes are often tucked away on side streets and suffice for recreational purposes at best. Thus cyclists must ride in the roadway (as the law allows) in order perform daily errands and tasks. (i.e. Sprague Ave or Division) End result…auto drivers will be slowed down somewhat and forced to pay attention to others. Conversely, cyclists need to get off the sidewalks, ride in the proper direction on the roadway, follow the rules of the roadway and get a rear view mirror.

IMy car’s been hit by bike riders twice…different cars. Bike riders might save themselves injury if they stayed off main artierials. Staying on the side streets might be less than optimal but it might stave off injury and worse.

Bicyclists have the legal right to the roads. Period. This cyclist was doing everything right. period. If the driver was driving correctly, he wouldn’t have had any issues seeing the cyclist.
It is interesting how the initial reports on this incident blamed the cyclist. Thankfully they have corrected this mistake.
One more fact: the driver did not have insurance. This was not reported though. So here we have a driver who doesn’t follow the law and can’t seem to drive a car without hitting other vehicles. We shall see what the outcome is, but I am willing to bet he will be back on the road before the cyclist recovers from his injuries.

How come every time there’s a bicyclist/car collision, several people have to chime in with their “everyone would be safer if bicyclists were off the main roads” nonsense? Last I checked, there were a lot more collisions between motor vehicles than any other type, but no one ever suggests we limit which automobiles can use the main arterials.

Hey Bob and Nancy — this is why we need Complete Streets.

A lot of car drivers who never bike or only do so recreationally are not aware of the amount of tire puncturing debris on the shoulder of the road. Many times, drivers have honked at me because I am not hugging the curb but they don’t realize I simply don’t want to bike over broken glass, screws….I even have extra heavy duty puncture resistant tires because I got tired of so many flat tires.

Doesn’t look as if the local media has caught on to this yet….this guy, WILLIAM KNIGHT just struck and killed a pedestrian yesterday. When will this guy be stopped?
