Bullpups rally to defeat Bears

For the second time this season, the Gonzaga Prep softball team came back from a seventh-inning deficit to win a Greater Spokane League contest in extra innings.

Also for the second time, Sierra Little was at the center of the rally. Little drove in two runs with a double to tie the game in the seventh before Mackenzie Via drove in the winner in the eighth to lift the Bulldogs (5-5) to an 8-7 win over Central Valley (4-6) Thursday at G-Prep.

Sami Cassano had a pair of hits, including a home run, to lead the Bullpups, while Jenna Gaskin had collected three hits for CV.

In other GSL games, Delaney Zalud had two hits and a stolen base and Abby Ricco added two hits and three RBIs as Mt. Spokane (5-5) held on to surprise University (8-2) 6-5 at U-Hi. … Morgan Rueff’s base hit in the bottom of the seventh scored Elizabeth Roginski to give Shadle Park (5-5) a 5-4 victory over visiting Lewis and Clark (3-7). Haylee Cushner earned the win, allowing four runs on six hits while striking out five in seven innings. … Iman Gary homered in the fourth and Hillary Johnson added two hits, including a double, as Ferris (4-6) shut out North Central (5-5) 6-0 at NC. Erica Santarossa went the distance for the Saxons, allowing four hits. … Rogers (4-6) got to Tiffany Lucas early, scoring four runs in the second, and the Pirates cruised to a 10-6 win over East Valley (3-7) at Rogers. Devann Burney went 3 for 4 with two doubles, two runs and two RBIs for the Pirates.

•Nicole Lane threw a three-hit shutout in the opener for Cheney (3-5, 1-3), but Clarkston (4-3, 2-2) rallied in the second game of the Great Northern League doubleheader, scoring five unanswered runs to win 6-5 in Cheney.

Mandy McDowell finished the day with five hits, a triple and four runs scored to lead the Blackhawks.

Boys soccer

Austin Walker scored in the 47th minute, giving Cheney a 1-0 advantage it held the rest of the match as the Blackhawks (9-1, 8-0) edged Pullman (5-5, 5-3) in Great Northern League action in Cheney.

Walker’s goal came on an assist from Alex Adams after Greyhounds goalkeeper Chris Hamlin made the initial save in front of the goal.

In other GNL matches, Gabe Lossurdo scored twice and Petra Lee added a pair of assists as Medical Lake (8-1, 7-1) scored its goals in the first half to shut out Riverside (1-9, 1-7) 3-0 at ML. … Victor Tardelli scored three times, including a goal in the 64th minute, to give visiting Deer Park (6-3, 5-3) the lead for good in a 4-2 win over West Valley (3-6, 2-6). … Austin Durfee drove a ball from 18 yards out to beat keeper Alex Hart, lifting Clarkston (5-5, 4-5) to a 2-1 win to keep host Colville (1-8, 0-8) winless in league play. After the Indians took the lead in the third minute on a goal from Justin Graham, Jordan Semanko knotted the game at 1-1 5 minutes later.

Baseball

Kyle Overland went 3 for 4 and Salvador Miranda added two hits as the duo combined for five runs and four RBIs in Timberlake’s (5-5, 3-2) 12-1 five-inning romp over Intermountain League foe Kellogg (3-8, 1-5) in Kellogg.
