Tea party in the park

Anti-tax event attracts activists for many causes

There may be plenty of disagreement in political rallies of thousands, but Oakesdale resident Ken Hanson’s opinion on taxes is one that was nearly universal at Thursday’s Tea Party gathering in Spokane.

“As the government continues to increase taxes and put more and more regulations on us, it’s impossible for us to prosper,” said Hanson, a farmer and owner of an irrigation supply business who brought his sons to the event.

Thousands gathered near the floating dock in front of the Spokane Convention Center to rally around conservative ideas and protest the direction of the country.

There were American flags and “Don’t Tread on Me” flags and dozens of signs, including the slogans “Stimulus: Audacity of dopes,” “Socialism and Marxism are in our White House” and “Get the UN out of Spokane.”

Kirk Smith, vice president of the Tea Party of Spokane, which organized the event, said members of any party or no party are welcome in the Tea Party.

“We’re not here to do the dirty work for the Republican Party,” Smith said. “We’re here to do the dirty work of the people.”

More than 3,000 attended – Tea Party President Dan Selle estimated the crowd at 5,000 or more.

Speakers at the event listed concerns about “death care legislation” and infringements on property rights.

Washington state Rep. Shelly Short, R-Addy, criticized Democratic legislators who voted to allow tax increases without a supermajority.

“You can’t tax us out of the recession,” she said.

Not all the statements were popular. John Waite, who owns Merlyn’s and hosts a local political radio show, praised not only U.S. Rep. Ron Paul (who enjoyed strong support in the crowd), but also Rep. Dennis Kucinich – who almost didn’t vote for health care reform because it wasn’t liberal enough. (Waite was later booed after recommending that voters choose third-party candidates).

Top billing went to Idaho Gov. Butch Otter, who won a standing ovation for his speech that focused on states’ rights. He criticized the 17th Amendment of the Constitution, which gave citizens the right to pick their U.S. senators. Until 1913, they were chosen by votes of state legislatures.

Otter asked the crowd to “assert our rights under the 10th Amendment of the Constitution.”

That amendment says “powers not delegated” to federal government in the Constitution “are reserved to the states respectively, or to the people.”

Otter also stressed that folks wishing to change the direction of government do so legally and peacefully.

“If we disregard the rule of law, we’re going backwards in a big way,” he said.

As folks walked into the rally they could sign petitions for conservative causes including gun rights, repealing tax increases, nullifying federal health care reform and giving sheriffs the “authority to arrest rogue federal officials.”

A couple other groups usually not associated with conservative causes took advantage of the large crowd. At least two people roamed the audience to get signatures for a proposal decriminalizing marijuana.

Michael Lyons and Pete Cleary said they found some support.

“They preach about the federal government intruding in their lives,” Cleary said. “The drug war is a pretty good example of that.”

Austin DePaolo, who ran unsuccessfully for the Spokane school board last year, even found people willing to sign a petition for a ballot proposal that would raise taxes aimed at lowering the dropout rate. He got four signatures in about 20 minutes. That’s a bit less than he’d expect in most crowds, he said, but not bad considering the Tea Party’s concern about taxes.

One person DePaolo failed to persuade to sign his petition was Laura Carder, who defeated him last year in the primary.

Carder, who lost to incumbent Rocky Treppiedi in the November election, said she’s concerned that Obama and congressional leaders are purposely trying to anger the public “so somebody might go berserk” thus allowing them to declare martial law and “shut down the electoral process because they know that they’re going to lose big time in November.”

In some ways, though, Carder said, Obama has been good for conservatives.

“He has awakened people out of their state of apathy.”

Most “tea parties” are still hosted by little girls, using tiny little tea services, with teddy bears as guests…

  • jonster on April 16 at 1:18 a.m.

That’s one of the largest gatherings of angry overweight white people I’ve ever seen. Impressive.

Less than 1000 attended. Someone is smoking their TEA bags.

Misjustice being incognito, wore his frilly little dress to HIS tea parties. Third Finger sandwiches anyone?

Jon, you might consider having Ryan chase down the post above that is a spam advertisement…

    Re your article:

With Laura Carder on their side, I truly believe we don’t have a thing to worry about…. why on earth would you give her any press…. was she the best of the bunch?? Come on Jon…. It is noted that you did not name even one local Republican of Repute… where was Mr Mielke, Mr French, Mr Apple?? Mr Richard? Ex Commissioner Harris? and other prominent polititicians…. Ms McLaughlin etc ?? An Out of State Governor?? not a lot of credibility here…. not even any of the City Of Spokane Valley crew?? Penny Lancaster ??? the bizarre woman who is the head of the Republicans locally. Cindy Zapotoky (sp) ?? seems as if they did not really rally the troops… . hmmm john

A Fox News rally. How embarrassing.

  • BethB on April 16 at 6:55 a.m.

Why wasn’t it mentioned in the article that taxes have decreased this past year, for most Americans? It’s one thing to report on people who are misinformed. It’s quite another to let their misinformation stand as fact.

According to the below-linked article that ran yesterday: “The non-partisan Center for Budget and Policy Priorities reported on Wednesday that ‘Middle-income Americans are now paying federal taxes at or near historically low levels.’ How low? The average family of four right now is paying 4.6 percent of its income in federal income taxes — the second lowest percentage in 50 years.”

I`ll wager that the elected officials were not listening to the TEA PARTY people yesterday. One group of democrats decided to vote as independents. Good for them. Proves to me that the folks who are shouting they are republicans aren`t listening. Throw the bums out. Mayor Verner was not at all popular as well as the city council. They don`t get it.

  • Scoutster on April 16 at 7:46 a.m.

I attended. I found the people to be very cordial and mannerly, none of the angry shout downs that I normally associate with them (but they had no straight man…I’m sure it was there festering). When I think tea party, I think of congresspeople trying to talk to their constituents and having no luck.

I saw a couple of black folks, but it was overwhelmingly white and old. I would say 3,000 was generous. My count (and I have some experience in this) was approx 2,500 during the speeches. Probably another 500 or so came and went or milled around the entry area. 5,000 is fantasy land.

They appear to be focused on values more than a specific agenda…these folks are afraid. There was not a lot of analysis or problem solving in the speeches, the signs, the rants in the audience. They seemed to share an intense dislike of Obama, many of them for him as a person. (But that didn’t strike me as unusual…I have been to events where W was vilified in the old days.)

The speakers were quite a mix, and I think some went off the script. Probably the organizers were fretting their choices. Butch just gave a litany of everything wrong with no real solutions.

I was left even more with a feeling that this is a group that will experience dwindling effectiveness because they have no real agenda (legislation, etc). But they will probably nip at GOP heels all year.

Progressives should encourage partiers, I think, as they will force right leaning candidates to move ever more so and marginalize them. Partiers are not unlike the Democratic Party left in the post-Vietnam, post Watergate era which made the Dems move left and ultimately left out.

They are going to annoy the hell out of Republicans this fall!

  • leekinny on April 16 at 8:15 a.m.

Stop being silly. 95% of the American people got a tax break this year.

There are areas of agreement between progressives and tea partiers such as the influence of lobbiests on our legislators and TARP. Far-out conspiracy theories and bizarre untruths interfeer with that conversation ever taking place.

  • johnclarke on April 16 at 8:45 a.m.

Beth B, thanks for the facts. To answer your question - if people started understanding the truth - what on earth would they protest against? Besides, don’t these people have jobs or something? How do they find time in the middle of the day to attend these things?

  • spokanada on April 16 at 8:47 a.m.

    scoutster, thanks for the post.

Hockey mom, the five people closest to the camera in the picture were old overweight americans. Why do you call someone an idiot for pointing that out?

  • BigE on April 16 at 8:47 a.m.

Tax breaks for the poor and needy, the middle class gets to pay the bill for freebies, saddle up to the trough, quit your job, go back to school, those high paying jobs are just around the corner. Case in point, wife and I claimed zero on withholdings, made over $80,000 and we sent our check yesterday to the government. We do not have college degrees, no one gave us an education, hard work is why I am where I am, period, no suck up, no hanging on to Daddys wallet.
I received my 3% raise in a 2 year span, I make less money today than I did 3 years even though my salary is higher.

I cannot wait until we can fight it out with weapons enstead of words.

Threats of violence made on internet posts are childish. Grow up!

If you have any original thoughts I would like to know how you propose we pay for Iraq and Afghanistan. Bush thought we could do it with tax cuts, turned out he was wrong!

    You may fear the government
When you’re moneys all but spent
An’ you’re worried THEY will come and get you soon
But when it comes to quacko’s
    you cannot top the wacko’s
Wearin tin foil hats an barkin at the moon
Now these tea folks are a cryin
And they swear they aren’t a lyin’
That your freedoms being shoveled out the door
So instead of pitchin tea now it’s sos-security
Medicare and education and the war.

Now to add to cannon fodder
The Tea’s courted ole Butch Otter
Who would give you back your money for the rent

    Because their protest is shortsighted
So their culminated voice is like a bray
Still be cautious with this throng
And do listen to their song
For it shows our nations liability
    These hammer-heads all vote

    Mr. Natural, great job LOL

  • leekinny on April 16 at 9:07 a.m.

We know a lot more about the tea party now than when the boisterous mobs over-ran town hall meetings. Besides the outlandish beliefs, with no basis in fact, and their more violent members who function without criticism we know they are more educated and wealthier than the average American.

You would think an education would protect against gullibility, but they seem just as convenient a target for propaganda as the least educated among us.

As far as being well to do Republicans go, it brings back their favorite theme of individual responsibility.

People do have, however they vision it, a responsibility for themselves, family, community, country and God, as they see God, but for a variety of reasons both legitimate and illegitimate within ones control and outside of it, these responsibilities may become compromised.

The conservative Republican mantra of ‘individual responsibility’ is designed to absolve oneself of any responsibility except for those so conveniently cherry-picked while easily lowering the dignity and humanity of those in need.

Individual responsibility means everyone else’s responsibility but mine. It’s an ideological principal embraced by modern conservatives that is designed to protect the conscience of the individual or group from social or religious liability.

It’s used to absolve one from long held Judeo-Christian principles such as ‘by the grace of God go I’ and ‘to those who have been given much, much is expected’. It implies that the gifts from God which we all possess in one form or another have been distributed in equal measure with similar qualities. It’s been used as an excuse from responsibility from everything from the homeless addict to the poor and those with mental and physical illnesses, to such extremes as victims of natural disaster.

I wonder where the Tea-Partiers anger was when the Republican Party (who controlled the White House and Congress) was dragging the country into this recession the previous 8 years? I’m not saying the Democrats have done a great job either but this version of our government inherited many of the issues our economy is having. There just seems to be alot of revisionist history going on.

I dont get why there are two articles in the paper for the Tea Baggers (love how some of the most homophobic people in the country picked that phrase by the way).

Amazing how none of these Tea Baggers can answer where they were during the Bush years of running up huge national debts, giving billions to large corporations and giving them even bigger tax breaks. Ending regulations that allowed the worse recession since the Great Depression and then giving the first $700+ billion dollars to the banks (which you all seem to forget about). He also gave billion and billions worth of tax cuts to the biggest and wealthiest corporations and people in this country, while actually RAISING taxes on the lowest of income earners and most middle class people. WHERE WAS YOUR ANGER THEN??? It looks really bad when most of the things you are upset about and fighting to change for happened during the Republicans/Conservative watch and now we progressive Democrats are fixing your damn mistakes and you are pissed about it. TO BAD, YOU HAD YOUR CHANCE FOR EIGHT YEARS AND YOU FREAKING BLEW IT!!! INSTEAD OF FIXING THINGS YOU WANTED AND GOT WAR INSTEAD……OPPS, YOUR PARTY EFF’ED UP NOW DEAL WITH IT AND SHUT UP!!!!!

Regarding the incompetence of the previous Republican controlled administration.

Sooner or later you get fed up enough with the Stooges that it’s time to fire them. You don’t decide to keep them because they’re the ones that began the job so they should be the ones best able to complete it.

After enough pies thrown, eyes gouged and things broken, when they respond to your misgivings with, “Well what would you do?” sounds a bit lame.

The most logical answer would be to say, “We’ll figure it out without your incompetent help” and “Don’t let the door hit you in the rear on the way out”.

To do otherwise would be ignorance surrendering to stupidity in the name of gullibility.

  • johnclarke on April 16 at 3:40 p.m.

    http://www.nytimes.com/2010/04/15/us/politics/15poll.html

Here is a very interesting poll and article about the makeup of the Tea Party.

“Nearly 9 in 10 disapprove of the job Mr. Obama is doing over all, and about the same percentage fault his handling of major issues: health care, the economy and the federal budget deficit. Ninety-two percent believe Mr. Obama is moving the country toward socialism”

That quote convinces me our President is doing a fine job, because - as you will see in the poll Tea Partiers are basically white people over 45 who are pretty well off - and don’t want anyone else to have things like health care. Also, it’s got to be race. If over half of the Tea Party still approves of George Bush, quite possibly the worst President in modern times - then something is motivating all this illogical emotion. 95% of us are paying less taxes, yet the Tea Party is protesting higher taxes. Huh.

It”s got nothing to do with FOX NEWS. It’s got everything to do with taking people money and giving it away to others. It’s got nothing to with Jesus or Christianity. It’s got much more do with Obama’s plan of taking money and sending elsewhere.
Tea Partiers aren’t angry even though it’s what seel ( the drama) and so it makes it to TV.

WHen 50% of possible taxpayers don’t taxes anymore…and when the top5% of earners pay th ehuge amjority of taxes Including those who don’t pay), it seems something’s wrong. All those high eaners did was work their heads off, usually went to school, did the work, were smart n how they manged their own money. Somehow, many people think wealthy people are evil. How did working for money and being successful at it become evil.
There’s no tricks or rich people don’t have slaves seeking retribution…and yet it’s the opinion that wealthy people should pay…and pay through the nose. Obama has created a type of class warfare. He’ll be defeated in this. America has a history of being fair. Rammed healthcare down the throats and it’ll never stick. VAT tax won’t either.

You people who hate wealth need to wake up. Obama did $5.8 million this year on a $250K salary. Nobody’s compaining about him. It’s NOT your money…it belongs to the people who earned it. They didn’t steal your money. They made their own money…legally too.
SO what’s itching most of you who relish in talking bad or negatively against growing wealth? Why would anyone think their entitled to some else’s money? It’s nonsense….but disorder thinking is very frequent these days.

And before Diana comes along and yells” don’t you realize you’re paying for them anyway”…I’ll say…no I’m not and I shouldn’t have to. Go to school, get good jobs, compete nd be smart. What’s wrong with that. Nobody makes millions on the backs of others. It’s just a construct the left wants you to believe.

  • soundbarrier on April 16 at 10:51 p.m.

Shelly Short deserves a loud, Joe Wilson “YOU LIE!” comment when she said that public employees make 2-3 times as much as people in the private sector. Maybe she should cut her state salary to half or a third of what she gets now. I guess she forgot about all the Wall Street Bankers who got millions in bonuses.

Another really dumb sign spotted at the rally proclaimed “FOX NEWS FOR THE TRUTH”

The guy wasn’t even ashamed to be carrying that around.

And what’s up with the initiative petition to allow the County Sheriff to arrest “rogue” federal agents? If they’ve gone rogue (breaking the law), then they are already subject to arrest. The explanation I got was that it is a Constitutional thing and they wanted certain federal agents in the course of doing their jobs to be arrested. They are misinterpreting the Constitution.

  • leekinny on April 17 at 10:14 a.m.

The top 2% have a ‘mountain sized pile’ of money, while the rest of us, combined, have a molehill sized amount. That’s what there is, except for the money we buy (borrow) to run the countries affairs.

That ‘mountain sized pile’ came from the hard labor, dreams and desires of all of us.

There’s great benefits to conducting business in this land of ours. Which is why much is required from those who have been given so much. There is both a moral and patriotic responsibility to fairly contribute back to the strength and wellbeing of the community from where such abundance has been acquired.

Taxes on these 2% are at an unheard of historic low. Those cuts were given under the misguided theory that they would ,in their self interest and benevolence, trickle wealth down towards all of us.. That didn’t happen. They hoarded, and sent jobs and money overseas rather than patriotically investing in their own nation, as was promised, by the Reagan Conservatives.

It’s time to end the gravy train they have been riding, for too long. It’s time to restore the tax structure that helped make us the strongest country in the world.

Tax cuts, as an incentive, for small and middle to large corporations, to put capitol back into their work force and business infrastructure is a good step toward rebuilding our nation. However, to consistently put profit above responsibility to employees and community is a distortion of good citizenship.

Are they part of this nation or not ?

What are their responsibilities to our country ?

Many corporations leave for foreign lands because of lust for low worker wages, lack of rights, tolerance for child or slave labor, along with poor pollution standards. Their actions caused a lot of harm to the host nations, American citizens and their living standards. In order to help make things right, in the future, to sell in this country, they should meet a tariff equal to the average, after manufacturing, selling price in this nation. They must also be required to meet child labor, human rights, and pollution standards set by the UN.

When we leave our borders there is an expectation on our part to be ambassadors for the United States. That includes businesses, too.

As far as the overseas jobs go, I’ve never funded and nor will I ever fund a company that goes overseas and takes jobs away from the US> CLinton opened that door. Bush sr. designed it but Clinton open it wide.
We need to keep our business here…in the US. But all anyone in the US can be offered is opportunity…better when they’re young and can develop opportunites.
Think CHina offers opportunity to it’s lower class? Go spend at least 1 month there and you’ll soon understand why there a police with machine guns over their shoulders on each corner.
Fear and worship are odd things. People fear the government and so they worship it.

In the US, we provide chances. A preordained outcome isn’t assured in anything. Work and results are…but the results may fall short of expectations… then comes Bush jr and he provided the same theme…moreso to those monied types who were already on board with the Clinton agenda. He gave us retribution war ine one we didn’t start. Unfortunately, he turn left and went to the wrong country…something I’ll never figure out.

SO here we are in Obam’s version of war. Iraq is pretty much wrapped up…changed for a while but Arabs are patient…..it’ll go back to the time when Saddam had his way with things…obviously it won’t e Saddam but it’ll be a group of Saddam types. It’ll come to nothing except loss of life for our kids. The Afghan situation is now Obama’s….and he’s not doing well with it. He won’t. It’s always just a containment stalemate over there. I know firsthand.

But this Obama is a different critter. He wants socialism. He figure things should be evened out. No basis for it but all his mentors were left reactionaries so he knows nothing else. If the tea party rankles you, it’s just that group of Americans who will fight back against Obama’s group. They get the news…and the movment will keep things alive till Novemeber. Repubs will gain some seats in the Senate and lots more in the House.
Will it matter? Not so much as I thought it might.

I will forever hold to the idea that when people work hard and make tons/bucketfulls of money even, they’re entitled to keep it…not have it taken in new laws and rules….aimed at equalization of wealth. That concept is just a bit far left for me. It’ll be modified soon and things wil drift back to the center…where everyone has opportunities. I detest inherited wealth. Just too easy for me. I won’t consider raiding somebody’s inherited money because that’s their business.

With Obama, he’ll raid anything and everything to fund social causes….but he’ll build nothing. My guess is that his Chicago way of doing thngs will be gone soon enough too. Hope so. He’s opened his own set of doors…and they’re all self defeating…. unless America just rolls over. I don’t think so.

    Daisy…
Are you saying you are in favor of inheritance taxes or against them?

The reason we are in such dire straights, and will be, is that capitalism runs on labor, capital, and technology. We don’t have a monopoly on any of those anymore.

American primacy is over. Get over it. And working hard while spinning in a hamster wheel isn’t gonna get you a treat…it will just make you tired and angry.

There are a lot of hamsters out there. Obama speaks for many of them. Including me.

  • Scoutster on April 17 at 7:01 p.m.

BTW, Daisy…see if you can respond without insulting anyone.

  • Scoutster on April 17 at 7:31 p.m.

    Daisy…
I apologize..that last comment of mine was intemperate and uncalled for as you hadn’t been insulting.

    I was wrong…sorry.

Dazee: All I can say is wow!

Iraq won’t emerge with a Sadaam type leader. He was in the minority and as such needed to rule with an iron fist. Iraq was the most developed nation in the middle east before the U.S. became hell bent upon destroying their culture, a country who was an ally of the U.S. for decades. Iran will run Iraq in the future and that is exactly what most experts on the middle east predicted at the beginning of the movement to “democratize” the region.

You might want to drop the whole “Chicago style” blasts… I was recently in Chicago and it looked like they were doing a lot better than Spokane. A lot.

More than 500 million Chinese citizens moved into the middle class over the past decade. Keep believing in the myth of upward mobility in the U.S. because it just might help you further ignore the 40 million people who live in poverty because of your unjustified fealty to wealth accumulation.

Please have the bravery to post exactly what business you own so people who read your posts on here can decide for themselves whether or not to engage in commerce there. I bet you don’t have the guts.

    Spoketucky,

I believe that you also once mentioned that you were a business owner. If you are asking Daisy to publicly put her information out there, surely you can “man-up” and do the same. Why not lead by example??

    (Do you have the guts?)
