Gonzaga uses 21 hits to whip Pepperdine

Drew Heid had three hits and four runs, Royce Bolinger added four hits and three RBIs and Gonzaga (12-20-1, 2-1-1) pounded out 16 runs on 21 hits to thump Pepperdine (11-17, 1-2) 16-3 in West Coast Conference baseball action Friday at Patterson Complex.

Cody Martin threw six innings, allowing three runs on seven hits to earn the win.

•Kurt Heyer struck out 14 in 82/3 innings, holding Washington State (19-12, 3-4) to three runs as No. 21 Arizona (24-9, 5-5) won the opener of their three-game Pac-10 series 5-3 in Tucson, Ariz.

Derek Johnson hit his 18th career home run for WSU in the top of the ninth inning.

•Geoff Brown allowed one run on six hits in 51/3 innings to lead Washington (19-13, 4-3) to a 7-3 win, snapping Pac-10 foe California’s (20-11, 6-4) eight-game winning streak in Berkeley, Calif.

Softball

After North Idaho (28-22, 21-17) fell in the opener of its Scenic West Athletic Conference doubleheader against College of South Idaho (35-16, 26-11) 5-2, Jessica Ross helped the Cardinals salvage a split.

Ross pitched three scoreless innings of relief to earn the win and hitting a two-run home run to lead NIC to the 6-2 victory in the second game in Coeur d’Alene.

•Leading 3-2, No. 1 Washington (34-3, 6-1) erupted for six runs in the top of the seventh inning to put away No. 17 Oregon (29-7, 5-2) 9-2 in Pac-10 action in Eugene, Ore.

Danielle Lawrie (24-1) allowed two runs on seven hits, walked two and struck out 12.

Tennis

Rachel Burns’ 6-1, 6-0 sweep of Lisa Harunaga in the No. 1 singles match was the final stroke as Whitworth hammered Lewis & Clark 5-0 in the semifinal round of the Northwest Conference tournament at Yakima Tennis Club.

The Pirates had the match all but won after sweeping the doubles matches, led by the No. 1 doubles pairing of Erica Bosman and Alli Marshall, who edged Lisa Harunaga and Isabelle Borris 9-7.

The Pirates will play Whitman today for the tourney title.

•Scott Sheldon’s 4-6, 6-4, 6-0 rally victory over Henry Williams at the No. 5 singles spot proved to be the deciding match as No. 4 Pacific Lutheran dodged an upset by No. 5 Whitworth, winning 5-4 in the opening round of the Northwest Conference tournament at the Yakima Tennis Club.

The Pirates saw their season come to an end, despite a win at No. 1 singles from Donny Shelton who dispatched Joel Trudel, the 2009 NWC Player of the Year, 7-5, 6-7 (4), 6-2.

Track

The relay team Greg Hornsby, Jeshua Anderson, Ryan Barrett and Reny Follett won the men’s 1,600-meter relay as Washington State continued competition at the Mt. SAC Relays at Mt. San Antonio College in Walunt, Calif.

Eastern Washington’s Sarah Frey moved into second on the school’s all-time list in the 100- and 400-meter hurdles, running in times of 14.14 seconds in the 100 and 1:00.39 in the 400.
